There are more than 285 million people worldwide who have vision problems. According to the Fred Hollows Foundation, an estimated 32.4 million people around the world are blind. Ultimately, 90% of these people live in developing countries, and more than half of these cases of blindness are caused by cataracts. Indeed, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world.

Real-estate tycoon Yu Pengnian has now moved his entire $1.2 billion fortune into his charity to help China’s poor.

He made a fortune in real estate, and now he’s giving it back. The 88-year-old tycoon has slowly been transferring his wealth to his Yu Pengnian Foundation, and now he’s gone the final step, pledging his final $470 million in cash and property to the charity. This makes $1.2 billion he has put into his charity since he opened it in 2003.

“This will be my last donation. I have nothing more to give away,” he said at a press conference announcing the final donation…

New Laser Probe Developed For Space Program Could Spot Cataracts Earlier

Cataracts are the single biggest cause of blindness and are responsible for almost half of all cases worldwide. A new laser probe, originally developed for the U.S. space program, has been shown to detect the condition earlier than is otherwise possible. Its developers say that the technique can tell that a cataract is forming even when an eye looks perfectly clear.
