A year ago, Joel Smith was struggling to decide which panel to attend at South By Southwest, an annual tech (and music) conference in Austin, Texas. “There were many moments where I wish I could be three people so I could sit in all the really interesting panels,” he recalled. Absent cloning, his workaround was to Google for any notes, slides and videos he could find. “Not much turned up.”

The robot masters at KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) have updated their Mahru II robot with the new Mahru Humanoid Robot that is now a dead ringer for Sony’s tiny dancing QRIO robot. Scheduled to make its first major public appearance at Korea’s Robot World conference this week, the main feature of Mahru is its ability to simultaneously move its upper and lower body independently to perform dance moves or human-like actions in the same fashion as Honda’s amazing Asimo robot.

Three Japanese engineering giants, Nissan, NTT Docomo and Sharp, have joined forces to introduce the world’s first cellphone with the ability to act as an Intelligent Key for your car. Nissan’s Intelligent Key technology already comes standard in most of its vehicles, but incorporating the function into a cell phone pushes the boundaries of what Japanese multi-function phones can do. The wireless controller has the ability to lock or unlock a car, as well as start or stop the car’s engine.

Japan Space Elevator Association To Draw Up Timetable For Space Elevator 

The idea of a space elevator made of ultra-strong carbon nanotubes has been talked about a lot over the past several years, but recently some research groups have begun to investigate the idea as a real possibility. Most recently, scientists from Japan have started an organization called the Japan Space Elevator Association, and they plan to host an international conference in November to draw up a timetable for the machine.
