Most future retirees face fiscal troubles

The Great Recession and the weak recovery darkened the retirement picture for significant numbers of Americans.

A majority of Americans are headed toward a retirement in which they will be financially worse off than their parents for the first time since the New Deal.  This jeopardizes a long era of improved living standards for the nation’s elderly, according to a growing consensus of new research.

Nintendo in Japan released its annual fiscal report today, and even though pretty much every financial key figure took a nose dive, things still look pretty good on the whole. The company racked up $15.2 billion in revenue last financial year (which ended March 31, 2010), down 22% from last year. Operating profit dropped 36% to $3.8 billion, while net profit – for the first time in six years – dropped to $2.4 billion, compared with $2.9 billion a year earlier…

States facing tough times are eliminating commissions, merging departments and centralizing operations to stave off budget cuts and tax hikes.  The moves represent the most sweeping attempts in at least a generation to cut waste in the day-to-day operations of state government, according to government experts.
