So far real estate brokers have done very well in the Internet era.

Last month, around 18,000 people gathered in New Orleans to look at the future of real estate brokerage. Inside the massive Ernest N. Morial Convention Center booth after booth at the 2014 Realtors Conference & Expo extolled the joys and efficiencies of the new electronic economy and the technologies which can make brokers and lenders more efficient and profitable.

Nearly three years ago I wrote the first of this series – The Internet Big Five. I identified Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook as the “big five,” and compared their relative strengths in financials, consumer reach, and technology strengths. Some of the metrics were admittedly subjective – ranking relative offerings in “engagement” and “data,” for example.

Google to launch 180 low-orbit satellites that provide Internet access

The billion-dollar project will complement Google’s balloons and drones.

Google wants to deploy a fleet of satellites to extend internet access to areas around the world that do not have internet access. The fleet of satellites will cost Google $1 billion. Google “will start with 180 small, high-capacity satellites orbiting the earth at lower altitudes than traditional satellites, and then could expand.”

The growth of free Wi-Fi is transforming life in Africa

2014 is the “watershed year” for Wi-Fi, according to Ruckus Wireless. The company predicted the number of hotspots across the world would increase to 5.8 million by next year, an increase of 350 per cent from the number in 2011. (Video)

Huge 43% growth in online video watching in one year

People on the Internet watched 38.2 billion free videos online in the second quarter of 2014.

A new report from Adobe has found that we are wasting more time than ever watching video, and we are increasingly doing it online. What’s more, “online” no longer means “on a computer” — it increasingly means on a smartphone, a game console, or a set-top box like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV.
