Startup company GestSure uses Kinect for Windows to allow surgeons to look through medical images without having to touch unsterile equipment.
Most of the talk about Microsoft this fall will be about its new operating system, Windows 8. But the company is working hard on a long-term effort to reinvent the we interact with existing computers with its new Surface tablet. The company wants to make it as common to wave your arms at or speak to a computer as it is to reach for a mouse or touch screen today.

A new rival is bringing some serious competition to Microsoft when it comes to bringing motion controls to desktop and laptop computers. Leap Motion has just launched a gesture-control device that may not be as powerful as Kinect for Windows, but is definitely cheaper.

Your future shopping trips to Whole Foods may include a shopping cart that can follow you around the store, based on a recent product demonstration by Microsoft. The software giant was showing off a Kinect-powered shopping cart that can identify and talk to you, follow you around the store, scan items as you shop, and even put you through an automated checkout.

You are Kinected. Now What?
Congrats! That present you just unwrapped contained an Xbox 360 with Kinect! Or maybe you just bit the bullet and purchased one for yourself. Either way, you’re now the proud owner of some advanced motion sensing technology.
So what should you do first with your Kinect, one of the hottest items of the season? After many extensive hours of research (the vast majority of it jumping around in front of the TV), we have some suggestions for how you can get the most of your new motion control machine.
