MIT researchers discover self-healing metal

MIT has had a number of off-the-wall discoveries, so it takes something truly unexpected to throw the researchers there for a loop. A new smarter way to 3D print unveiled by MIT researchers

When it comes to 3D printing there seems to be few limits to what the technology can do or what range of products it can spawn, from lampshades to lunar bases.  It’s easy to neglect one key factor amid all the hype: Printing capabilities are directly wedded to the size of one’s printer. As home printers become more readily available, the size of their printing beds shrink. Any budding designer with a desktop 3-D printer can create an intricate scale model of the Millennium Falcon, but what about something as straightforward yet functional as a chair? It simply won’t fit inside the printing box.

MIT’s fog harvesting technology brings water to deserts

Deserts may not have a lot of water like in rivers or lakes or aquifers but that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t a lot of water around somewhere. Many desert-dwelling plants and animals have adapted to extract water from the air itself, relying on fog that reliably shows up in deserts near warm oceans.

Scientists successfully implant false memories into mice

Mice implanted with false memories.

U.S. and Japan memory researchers have, for the first time, implanted false memories into a lab animal. The researchers made mice believe that they had once received electrical shocks in their feet while sitting in a certain little chamber, even though that had never happened. Thereafter, whenever the researchers put the mice in that chamber, the mice would freeze up in a typical mouse response to fear.

MIT researchers envision a future of talking cars that can plan driver’s day

Researchers are building systems to enable humans to collaborate with robots and vehicles.

In the morning, you wake up and your robot starts the coffee maker and then sends the daily calendar to the car. The car then works on a plan that makes sure you keep to that schedule. This is the vision of MIT researchers who are developing systems to help people collaborate with robots and vehicles.

MIT’s autonomous robotic plane’s indoor flight: Video

Dozens of research teams have competed in a series of autonomous-helicopter challenges posed by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI); progress has been so rapid that the last two challenges have involved indoor navigation without the use of GPS.

MIT creates solar panels from leaves and grass

Andreas Mershin, a researcher at MIT, has created solar panels from agricultural waste such as cut grass and dead leaves. Mershin says in a few years it will be possible to stir some grass clippings into a bag of cheap chemicals, paint the mixture on your roof, and immediately start producing electricity.
