Controversy brews over use of autonomous killer robots in war

A scene from the 2003 film Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

U.N. will begin to lay the groundwork for the role robots will play in war.

People are promised their quality of life will improve with the advances of technology, and what could be a better example of that than sending robots instead of humans into dangerous situations? Robots can help conduct research in deep oceans and harsh climates, or deliver food and medical supplies to disaster areas. (Video)

Brains of children from violent homes function same as combat soldiers

violent home

Witnessing violence can have a traumatic effect on the brain.

Scientists at the University College of London (UCL) and the Anna Freud Center liken the impact of family violence on the brains of children to the brains of soldiers exposed to combat. Both kinds of combat result in hypersensitivity to danger and put subjects at risk for developing anxiety disorders.

‘Bullet Proof Custard’ – A New Type of Liquid Armor

kevlar armor

The new light-weight material could eventually replace the “thick, heavy-layered plates” of Kevlar used in existing bullet-proof vests.

Researchers at BAE systems in Bristol combined a “shear-thickening” liquid with the existing material used in bullet-proof vests – called Kevlar – to create the new armor. The chemical formula of the new liquid is being kept secret but scientists say it works by thickening and becoming sticky on impact with a bullet.

Jaeger hid thousands of transparencies in a leather suitcase at the end of the war. The case was found by six US soldiers as they searched a house near Munich where he was staying but they were more interested in a bottle of cognac he had also slipped inside. (Pics)
