Tesla Motors lithium-ion battery packs aren’t just powering electric luxury sports sedans for wealthy any more. They’ve started appearing in a small number of California homes to store electricity generated by rooftop solar panels, and SolarCity, the Silicon Valley solar installer, will start providing Tesla batteries for businesses that want to cut their utility bills.

Volvo will introduce fleet of self-driving cars in Sweden by 2017

100 lucky customers will be given the opportunity to ride around in a car that does their driving for them.

Sweden has just announced that they will play host to self-driving cars in the next couple of years. England, Japan, Singapore and the U.S. have already announced that they will host fleets of self-driving automobiles, but Sweden’s 100-car strong automotive army will be the first manufactured by Volvo. Cyber Gym: Israeli hacking school that trains corporate cyber warriors

Israel’s new state-of-the-art “Cyber Gym” is where IT and infrastructure company employees train to defend against cyber attacks. The facility is a series of small buildings in the shadow of the looming Orot Rabin power station on Israel’s northern coastline. It was inaugurated this month by the Israel Electric Corp (IEC), which has experienced its fair share of cyber attacks.

Making big things out of small 3D printed pieces

Researchers at MIT have developed a lightweight structure whose tiny blocks can be snapped together much like the bricks of a child’s construction toy. The new material could revolutionize the assembly of airplanes, spacecraft, and even larger structures, such as dikes and levees, according to the researchers.

Google could one day deliver packages with self-driving cars and robots

A Google self-driving car.

Amazon and UPS are looking into package delivery via automated flying drones. But, according to the New York Times, Google’s recent interest in robotics lays out an interesting hypothetical situation: imagine a self-driving car pulling up in your driveway, and a robot getting out to deliver your package instead of a living, breathing UPS human bedecked in brown.

54% of parents will buy tech gifts this year, big opportunity for tablet and app creators

There are more tablets available with kid-protections and controls.

Tech is topping the Christmas lists this year as parents are prepared to indulge. A PBS Kids survey shows that 54 percent of parents plan to pick up a techie gift this year, more specifically tablets. Kids want bigger screens to play games and watch movies on. Kids want tablets more than they want game consoles, according to the survey.

UPS researching drones to compete with Amazon Prime Air

Amazon made headlines when it announced it was working on small drones that could deliver customers packages in half an hour or less someday. But the e-commerce giant isn’t the only company researching how to harness the potential of small unmanned aircraft: the world’s largest parcel service, UPS, has been experimenting with its own version of flying parcel carriers.
