Are you ready to ditch Netflix? Here are six alternatives to renting videos

More than 12,000 — mostly angry — comments have been posted on Netflix’s blog since it announced the new plan July 12.

Netflix recently announced that customers would have to pay extra for unlimited online video streaming starting September 1 and many subscribers are an unhappy  bunch.  Currently, Netflix members can get unlimited streaming and unlimited (mailed) DVDs for $9.99 a month but under the new plan announced, members will have to pay $15.98 a month to get both services ($7.99 for unlimited streaming and $7.99 for unlimited DVDs).

1940’s whiskey ads predicted the future

“Perfected television and radio telephone combined!”

Seagram’s advertised its VO Canadian whiskey back in the mid-1940’s with a series of extremely manly magazine ads about “Men Who Plan Beyond Tomorrow”. They were unspecified futuristic thinkers who liked the fact that Seagram’s was patient enough to age VO for six years. Each of the ads depicted a different miracle that would transform postwar America and they were glorious.  (Pics)

Students can now rent e-textbooks on Kindle

Students can now rent e-textbooks for periods from 30 to 360 days.

E-book textbook rentals have just been introduced by Amazon just in time for the fall semester.  This will allow students to save up to 80 percent on some titles. E-textbook rentals can be viewed not just on Amazon’s e-reader (and rumored Amazon tablet) but also on any device that can download the Kindle app including PCs, iOS devices, and Android phones and tablets. The rental option isn’t available for general interest e-books, just e-book versions of textbooks.

Using advanced imaging technology, scientists have recovered a 123-year-old recording made by Thomas Edison. The recording is believed to be the world’s first attempt at a talking doll and may mark the dawn of the American recording industry.

Employers are looking for people who can invent, adapt and reinvent their jobs every day, in a market that changes faster than ever.

The rise in the unemployment rate last month to 9.2 percent has Democrats and Republicans reliably falling back on their respective cure-alls. It is evidence for liberals that we need more stimulus and for conservatives that we need more tax cuts to increase demand. I am sure there is truth in both, but I do not believe they are the whole story. I think something else, something new — something that will require our kids not so much to find their next job as to invent their next job — is also influencing today’s job market more than people realize.
