TapSense: New touchscreen technology recognizes different parts of the finger

tapsense

TapSense is an experimental touchscreen system, that is able to tell the difference between different parts of the user’s finger.

Devices with small touchscreens, such as smartphones, certainly have their attractions, but they also have one drawback – there isn’t much room on their little screens for touch-sensitive features. Users will sometimes have to go into sub-menus, or make do with jabbing their fingers at tiny controls. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute, however, are working on an alternative. Their prototype TapSense system can differentiate between screen taps from different parts of the finger, and will perform different tasks accordingly. (Pics and video)

Bang! Lamp – You’ll shoot your light out, kid

Bang! Lamp

Bang! lamp by Bitplay is a pretty cool lighting accessory that lets you turn it on and off through a remote control that’s shaped like a gun. Pull the trigger, the light goes out and the lampshade actually tilts as if shot. It also works in reverse, though it doesn’t really make much sense that way. The gun is an IR controller and that dark band around the base of the lamp is the receiver. (Video)

Martin jetpack

A water-based jetpack isn’t exactly the most practical way to get to the office, but what about one that uses wind turbines to propel you across the city? That sounds a little more useful, which is why it is utterly awesome to hear that the Martin jetpack will be available in 2012. That’s the good news. (video)

Finally, YouTube will let you edit your videos online

If you upload your videos to YouTube—or most video sharing sites for that matter—there isn’t much you can do to improve them after the fact. Starting today, though, YouTube will finally provide basic tools to make your kitty videos suck less.

YouTube is rolling out the new feature in the form of a simple “Edit Video” button on your My Videos page. It’s a little like if they just took their cloud-based editor and sucked it back into the site…

The revolutionary “Disappearing Car Door”

The disappearing car door is labelled a “revolutionary concept in car technology” by its creators Jatech. The disappearing car door is a spin on the convention car door employed in nearly all automobiles today. Instead of the outward swinging hinged doors we are all familiar with, they have developed a door that retracts down into the body of the vehicle. To see exactly what I’m talking about, check it out on their website. Jatech have fitted the disappearing doors to Lincoln sedans, but can do custom fittings to customer’s vehicles of choice.

Facebook is gaining momentum in the video realm.

Facebook is already the largest photo site in the U.S., and now it is climbing up the charts for online video. Facebook now ranks as the third largest video site on the Web in terms of unique viewers according to comScore, with an estimated 51.5 million people on Facebook watching a video during the month of July. The month before it was No. 6. It passed Microsoft, Yahoo, and Viacom. Only Vevo (with 62 million monthly viewers) and YouTube (158 million) are bigger.

It is only a matter of time before Facebook passes Vevo, but can it ever take the crown from Google/Youtube?
