Door Delights are outdoor decorations made easy and fun for the whole family. They are themed for holidays, parties and special events.
Door Delights is one of the featured exhibitors at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase, which takes place on Oct 13, 2012 at the Denver Merchandise Mart, so you can see firsthand what all the buzz is about.
In a recent interview, inventor Sherry Samuelson found time to talk to us about safe and easy holiday decorating as well as the fun of finding funding…
What was the defining moment that led you to create this product?
When I discovered that 95% of Garage doors were coated steel.
What problem does it solve?
Door Delights don’t require any ladders or tools. Plus the physically challenged and elderly can now safely decorate the outside of the home for the Holidays .
After you came up with the idea, how did you size up the market and decide who your customers would be?
I did an impromptu study and noted that 3 billion dollars were spent each year on Holiday decorating. The results also showed the average home owner spends up to $150 each year on new decorations.
How did you go about naming your product?
I’ve gone though two names. First the product was called “Fun Stixs.” With help from my daughter it was renamed and now it’s’ Door Delights. This is a more direct name and it helps the consumer understand the product better. “Door” meaning, front, refrigerator, garage, or other place to put them. “Delights” mean it’s a delight putting them up and seeing your own personal billboard come alive. Hence the name, “Door Delights”
How long did it take you to create you initial prototype, and what problems did you run into along the way?
The prototype didn’t take long, I had in my mind what needed to be on the garage door. Then I just learned photo shop and started drawing images for a few holidays. The biggest problem I had was with the magnets. Initially they were not strong enough or wouldn’t stick to the PVC.
Funding a new idea is always tricky. How did you go about lining up the money you needed?
You are certainly correct in noting that funding is not easy! To begin the production of the product I started out with my own money, but I’m still looking for additional funding to take Door Delights to the next level. Friends have also helped me along the way with supplemental funding.
Is this a product you’d like to produce and sell yourself, or are you wanting to license it to someone else?
So far I have been selling this product myself to catalog and retail. If the licensing agreement is good, I would consider it.
What all channels are you using to market your product?
Facebook, Reps, Twitter, infomercials, videos, celebrity endorsement, calls and letters with samples.
How many people do you currently have involved in your business?
Me and Family!
How do you define success?
Success to me would be, taking an idea and doing something about it. Making the product available to the consumer.
What would hitting a “home run” look like in your mind?
Knowing that my faith and hard work put Door Delights in major retail stores.
Where do people go to find out more about your product?
