Wearing a cloud computer like Google Glass on your face can be important for capturing moments in life from a first-person perspective. Now the WNBA, the female division of the National Basketball Association (NBA), has decided to deploy its own version first-person camera to referees for live games.

Developed by Broadcast Sports, Inc., the Ref Cam offers 1080i resolution and has a mini transmitter that can be operated remotely by editors in the control room. In addition to the head-mounted camera, the referee also wears a vest containing other components of the system. The device was debuted this weekend at a WNBA game featuring the Phoenix Mercury and the Indiana Fever.

In an interview with ESPN, WNBA president Laurel Richie said, “the use of ref cam certainly offered a previously unseen point of view that really brought viewers into the action, adding a whole new visual and audio component to the experience.”

 The device affords viewers a first-person, high-definition view of the action that is so immersive that it could very well become the standard in other sports leagues in coming years.
