When complete, the multi-modal system that can meet the transportation needs of the vast majority of the local residents.

Where in the U.S. can you find the fastest growing transit system?  Salt Lake City, Utah.  They are the only city in the U.S. that is building light rail, bus rapid transit, streetcars, and commuter rail all at the same time. (Video)

According to Congress for New Urbanism President John Norquist, the Salt Lake City area has the fastest growing rail system in America. And as Streetsblog’s Angie Schmitt pointed out last month, “It’s the only city in the country building light rail, bus rapid transit, streetcars and commuter rail at the same time.”

The system isn’t complete yet, but if they keep going, they’ll end up with a truly great multi-modal system that can meet the transportation needs of the vast majority of the local residents with a very low environmental footprint, and all that in a way that’s also much healthier than driving everywhere. Kudos, Salt Lake City!

Make sure to watch the very last segment of the video, over the credits… It describes how tram lines were removed in the 1940s with help from Standard Oil and General Motors.
