Health Predictions Meet Language Models: Unveiling the Potential of Wearable Sensor Data

The healthcare landscape has undergone a transformative shift with the introduction of wearable sensor technology, continuously monitoring crucial physiological data like heart rate variability, sleep patterns, and physical activity. This technological leap has now intersected with large language models (LLMs), traditionally recognized for their linguistic capabilities. However, the challenge lies in effectively leveraging this non-linguistic, multi-modal time-series data for health predictions, requiring a nuanced approach beyond the conventional scope of LLMs.

This research focuses on adapting LLMs to interpret and utilize wearable sensor data for health predictions. The complexity of this data, marked by high dimensionality and continuous nature, necessitates an LLM’s ability to comprehend individual data points and their dynamic relationships over time. While traditional health prediction methods like Support Vector Machines or Random Forests have shown effectiveness, the emergence of advanced LLMs such as GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 has prompted exploration into their potential in this domain.

Breaking the Barrier: Researchers from SETI Institute Achieve First Conversational Exchange with Humpback Whales

Talking to animals has long been considered a fanciful childhood dream, but researchers from the SETI Institute, founded by astronomers Carl Sagan and Jill Tarter, may have just taken the first step towards turning this dream into reality. In a groundbreaking effort, scientists engaged in what is believed to be the first communicative exchange between humans and humpback whales, utilizing the whales’ own language.

Conducting their research at a humpback feeding area off the coast of Alaska, the researchers aimed to initiate interspecies communication. Dr. Brenda McCowan, a research behaviorist from UC Davis collaborating with the SETI team, stated, “We believe this is the first such communicative exchange between humans and humpback whales in the humpback ‘language.’” The ultimate goal of these interactions extends beyond any specific animal and is geared towards understanding non-human communication systems for potential extraterrestrial encounters—a primary focus of study at SETI.

Enhancing CRISPR-Cas3 Safety: Scientists Develop Off-Switches for Precise Genome Editing

Scientists have harnessed the revolutionary CRISPR technology, originally an immune system bacteria use to defend against viruses, to edit genetic information within cells. The FDA recently approved the first CRISPR-based therapeutic in December 2023, specifically designed to treat sickle cell disease using the well-studied CRISPR-Cas9 genetic scissor system.

While CRISPR-Cas9 has paved the way for gene editing, a newer and promising platform, Type I CRISPR or CRISPR-Cas3, with the potential for large-sized DNA removals, is emerging for potential therapeutic use.

Advancements and Challenges: Seven Key Technological Frontiers Explored

Protein Engineering and 3D Printing

Over two decades ago, a groundbreaking achievement led by David Baker at the University of Washington marked the inception of de novo protein design. While ‘Top7,’ an early creation, initially lacked biological functionality, today, the field has evolved into a powerful tool for tailor-made enzymes and proteins. Neil King, collaborating with Baker’s team, emphasizes the transformative nature of this progress, citing the ability to accomplish tasks that were deemed impossible just a year and a half ago. The success owes much to extensive datasets linking protein sequences to structures and the indispensable role of deep learning in unraveling the hidden grammar of protein architecture.

Deep Learning for Protein Design

The utilization of large language models (LLMs), such as those powering ChatGPT, has paved the way for ‘sequence-based’ strategies in protein design. Noelia Ferruz and her team at the Molecular Biology Institute of Barcelona developed ProtGPT2, an algorithm consistently producing synthetic proteins with stable folding. Meanwhile, ‘structure-based’ approaches, fueled by diffusion models akin to those in image-generating tools like DALL-E, demonstrated notable progress in bespoke protein-design algorithms in 2023. RFdiffusion software and the Chroma tool exemplify the power of these approaches in engineering novel proteins.
