In the future ordinary devices will be sensor equipped and wifi-connected. But the Internet of Things might be missing a concept that is something like its inverse: Let’s call it the Search Engine of Things. That is, a device or suite of devices that can identify and contextualize the objects that surround us in the physical world, from pills to trees to hamburgers.

Tor is the world’s largest and most well-known “onion router” network. Tor offers a degree of anonymity that has made it a popular tool of journalists, dissidents, and everyday Internet users who are trying to avoid government or corporate censorship (as well as Internet drug lords and child pornographers). But one thing that it doesn’t offer is speed.

Researchers invent super-elastic conducting fibers to make artificial muscles, sensors, and capacitors

conductive-fiber-with-super-elasticity

A University of Texas at Dallas research team has made electrically conducting fibers that can be reversibly stretched to more than 14 times their initial length and whose electrical conductivity increases 200-fold when stretched.

Canadian scientists are developing a system that could turn atmospheric CO2 into fuel

carbon-capturee_1024

An industrial carbon dioxide recycling plant is being developed by Canadian scientists that could one day suck CO2 out of the atmosphere and convert it into a zero-carbon e-diesel fuel. Developed by tech start-up Carbon Engineering and partly funded by Bill Gates, the system will essentially do the job of trees, but in places unable to host them, such as icy plains and deserts.
