Self-healing plastic grows back after damage

self-healing plastic

The newly-developed self-healing plastic can take rather extensive damage and heal it through a process of regeneration.

There are several self-healing substances in the world, ranging from the LG G Flex’s scratch-healing casing to Stanford’s synthetic self-healing skin.  A plastic developed by the University of Illinois is one of the latest plastics developed that regenerates when damaged.

OutRunner is a six-legged robot that never uses more 2 legs at a time

OutRunner

OutRunner is a six-legged bot that uses two sets of three legs to propel itself. The  footfalls are staggered to mimic how a biped runs, but mechanically it’s just spinning wheels to which the legs attach. If you have a smart enough algorithm it will not only remain upright but be steerable too. (Video)

The Cloud might be the most disruptive innovation ever

cloud-storage

What makes the cloud so disruptive is that it compels legacy players to change their business models.

In Harvard professor Clayton Christensen’s 1997 management classic The Innovator’s Dilemma, he coined the term disruptive innovation.  The central premise was that a change in technology can completely transform the basic economics of an business.

Solar-powered batteries woven into fabric boost wearable technology

battery

flexible polymer solar cells are integrated into the textile battery eliminating the need for connecting the battery to a power outlet for recharging.

Google Glass and a wave of smartwatches are just some of the choices in wearable electronics, and they are quickly multiplying. But the batteries still need to be plugged into something to charge up. What if your watch strap could contain the battery components, along with a flexible solar cell? Voilà: No more plugging in.

Solar thermophotovoltaic device has potential to tap the sun’s energy through heat as well as light

sun-energy

A nanophotonic solar thermophotovoltaic device.

Traditional photovoltaic solar cells have an inherent limit on the efficiency at which they can convert sunlight into energy. This limit—based on the bandgap of the material used and known as the Shockley-Queisser limit—is about 33.7 percent for standard solar cells. It is essentially due to any material’s inability to respond to all wavelengths of sunlight; so what if there was a way to change the wavelengths that actually reach the cell to those it converts best? MIT researchers have unveiled the best-yet version of that idea, known as solar thermophotovoltaics.
