Incredible 3D printed cityscape of Chicago

More companies offering workers unlimited time off

Engaged employees who had a lot of flextime at work had a 44 percent higher level of well-being than disengaged employees with very little to no flextime.

Talent Plus, like many companies across the Midlands,  finds summer an ideal time for employees to take off.  But employees at the Lincoln-based human resources firm don’t go through the formal process of accruing their leave. They check with their manager, coordinate with others in their department and take time off from a limitless bank of days and hours. In short, co-chairman Kimberly Rath said, no questions asked, as long as the work gets done.

DARPA unveils the Atlas DRC robot

Atlas

Meet Atlas, a massive humanoid robot was unveiled by DARPA at the headquarters of Boston Dynamics, just outside Boston. Atlas was built by Boston Dynamics for the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), whose goal is to advance disaster response robotics. The hope is that Atlas is the first step towards the day when robots, not humans, will be sent to help mitigate major catastrophes, such as the Fukushima nuclear accident. (Photos and video)

Job fair in China for college graduates.

College students in the U.S. facing the misery of an anemic post-graduation job market have company in an unlikely-seeming place: China. Despite entering a robust economy that seemed to weather the financial crisis as if were it a middling squall, China’s college graduates on average make only 300 yuan, or roughly $44, more per month than the average Chinese migrant worker, according to statistics cited over the weekend by a top Chinese labor researcher and reported today by the Beijing Times (in Chinese).
