Bottled water contributing to rising rates of tooth decay in young children

bottled water

About 45 percent of parents give their children bottled water instead of tap water.

The stronger food smells, the less you eat

food smell 1234567

Smell vs consumption.

The smell of a favorite food can literally make your mouth water. But a new study suggests that the stronger a food smells, the less of it you’ll eat—so it might be time for dieters to reach for the cured fish and curry.

The study, carried out by the Institute Food and Nutrition in The Netherlands, saw participants serving themselves custard out of squeezy tubes, while different concentrations of custard aroma were wafted past their nostrils. When a stronger smell was used, the amount of custard the participants ate decreased. The result appears in the wonderfully titled journal Flavor…

US nuclear security deals with 10 million ‘significant’ online attacks each day

Online attacks threaten us all.

Government agencies are no stranger to cyber attacks, and it turns out that America’s nuclear weapons are no different. According to National Nuclear Security Administration head Thomas D’Agostino, the agency has to deal with up to 10 million “significant cyber security events” daily. That’s a terrifying number, and D’Agostino admits that around a hundredth of a percent of those attacks experience success — which means that there are up to 1,000 successful attacks each day…

Robots now rule the warehouse.

Amazon just bought Kiva Systems for $775 million. The company makes robots that automate warehouse fulfillment.

The beauty of our system,” Raffaello D’Andrea says as he paces across the warehouse, ”is that you don’t have to walk over to the shelves to get things–the shelves come to you.” With that, he motions toward some 200 blue plastic racks sitting at the center of the building. A mechanical whir fills the room. And then the robots appear…

Biplane to break the sound barrier

biplane 3456

Cheaper, quieter and fuel-efficient biplanes could put supersonic travel on the horizon.

For 27 years, the Concorde provided its passengers with a rare luxury: time saved. For a pricey fare, the sleek supersonic jet ferried its ticketholders from New York to Paris in a mere three-and-a-half hours — just enough time for a nap and an aperitif. Over the years, expensive tickets, high fuel costs, limited seating and noise disruption from the jet’s sonic boom slowed interest and ticket sales. On Nov. 26, 2003, the Concorde — and commercial supersonic travel — retired from service…
