Hamster-Powered Strandbeest Walker

The mad genius at Crafbuartworks created a miniature, hamster-powered strandbeest walker. The walker is hamstered by the intrepid Princess, who is a champ.

The hamster powered? that’s just stupid, which is the exact reason why I did it. It’s different, hasn’t been done before, yet it’s in so many what’s-under-the-hood jokes. It also had a high likelyhood of working, so I had to attempt it. Only problem: I don’t have a hamster, I don’t want a hamster for a pet, and I don’t know what sort of power and weight a little critter like that has. All I know is that I’ve seen them go ballistic on the hamster wheel, and so they must have great weight to power ratio…

More Americans Are Deciding to be Buried with Their Pets

pet cemetary

Headstones above a pet and her master sit side-by-side at the Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in Hartsdale, N.Y.

Rhona Levy has her burial planned out. She will be cremated, her ashes will be divided into two bright red urns and she will be taken to the cemetery.  Then, half of her will go into a plot with Snow, Putchke and Pumpkin, and the other half will go in nearby with Shaina and Twinkie.

Woman Will Eat Dog Food on YouTube Every Day Until Animal Rights Law Passes

FOR NITRO!

Miami Beach resident Nikki Moustaki plans to eat dog food at least once a day every day until an Ohio animal cruelty law known as Nitro’s Law is passed. The law was spurred after 12 starving and 7 dead dogs were discovered in High Caliber K-9, a boarding kennel in Youngstown, OH.

The law is named after Nitro, a pet Rottwieler who died at the facility while his family had to attend to a sick relative out of state, and would increase animal cruelty to a fifth degree felony in Ohio punishable by up to a year in jail. Ohio is only one of nine states that doesn’t count the first count of animal cruelty as a felony. The law was passed in the state’s House of Representatives, but died in the Senate…

Early Bowel Cancer Detected by Dogs in Japan

Dogs sniffed out bowel cancer in more than nine out of 10 cases.

A Labrador retriever has sniffed out bowel cancer in breath and stool samples during a study in Japan.

The research, in the journal Gut, showed the dog was able to identify early stages of the disease.

It has already been suggested that dogs can use their noses to detect skin, bladder, lung, ovarian and breast cancers.

Cancer Research UK said it would be extremely difficult to use dogs for routine cancer testing.

The biology of a tumour is thought to include a distinct smell and a series of studies have used dogs to try to detect it.

‘Mussel Gel’ Can Repair Tissue and Bond Medical Implants

mussel

Mussel byssus enables mussel to surfaces even in water.

A new gel that the inventors say you can play with like Silly Putty, can repair torn skin, bond implants, or act as an adhesive for underwater machinery.  The invention, under development for several years, is now patent pending, and it’s all thanks to the biomimicry of a mussel’s byssus, the hair-size filaments that form a sticky foam enabling the mussel’s fierce attachment to rocks, substrates, and beds on the sea walls and floors.

Monsanto Wins Big and Consumers Again Get Screwed

monsanto_control_food

What a great time to become a vegan!

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has officially approved the unregulated planting of Monsanto’s genetically engineered alfalfa. In a move that will undoubtedly set a precedent for what comes next (namely, the question of whether or not to deregulate GE sugarbeets) Vilsack did nothing more, and nothing less than obliterate our choice as organic consumers to be assured that we are avoiding genetically modified organisms in our food…

China Bans Satirical Bunnies

As China gears up for the Year of the Rabbit, the nation’s Communist authorities have censored a bunny cartoon with political overtones. The Chinese New Year – which falls this year on February 3 – is the country’s biggest holiday. Families come together for several days of feasting and gift-giving. But, this year, a New Year-themed cartoon posted on a popular Chinese website seems to have rankled officials. Censors have deleted the video, in an apparent reaction to its biting political satire.

The three-minute animation begins with rabbit babies being poisoned, a blatant reference to a recent toxic milk scandal that left six children dead…

Dairy Industry Fights FDA’s Proposed New Drug Testing for Milk

4-diary industry

How could there possibly be antibiotics in my milk?

The dairy industry is butting heads with the FDA over the agency’s plan to increase testing for antibiotics in milk. Food safety advocates are concerned about overuse of drugs in dairy cows (and increased antibiotic resistance in humans), while the industry says the new testing procedures would cause a lot of milk to be wasted because the results can take a full week to come back.

Certain farms are already caught regularly with milk containing illegal levels of drugs—and farmers also use drugs that are not regularly tested for.

Don’t Sleep With Your Pet, You Make Catch Something

sleeping with pet

You could get sick letting your pet sleep with you.

Letting sleeping dogs lie in your bed can make you sick, research suggests. Pet owners may increase the chances of contracting everything from worms to the bubonic plague. Of the 250 known diseases transmitted from animals to humans, more than 100 of them come from domestic animals, researchers say.
