Wireless charging for electric vehicles has finally hit the road

car

I’m on a bus headed for Bletchley Park, however I’m not going to visit the UK’s second-world-war code breaking centre.  In fact, I’m just along for the ride. I’m on an electric bus that is one of the first vehicles to use inductive charging technology. Its batteries charge wirelessly when the bus stops to pick up passengers. No need to plug in to charge.

Self driving cars will change how we use transportation

selfDrivingCar

Self driving cars will probably lead to steep decline in fossil fuels, personal ownership, and accidents. These vehicles will pick you up, drop you off, and go to wherever it’s needed next. In 2014 an estimated 2.926 billion miles were traveled. During that year 32,675 people lost their lives and many more were injured. Around $200 billion dollars in insurance claims, uncompensated losses, and damaged property were also reported.

Transparent wood is the new glass

transparent wood

Wood, an inexpensive and renewable resource, has many applications. Including building materials for high rises, bicycles, and foam insulation. Recently researchers developed transparent wood for potential use in windows, and solar cells, providing a cheaper alternative to silica-based glass. Led by Prof. Lars Berglund at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology, researchers chemically remove lignin from natural wood fibers – lignin is one component of wood cell walls. What was left was a material that was “beautifully white,” but still not transparent.
