COMAN – a robot that can’t be knocked over no matter how hard you shove it

COMAN

Mimicking the many distinct balancing adjustments standing humans make when unexpectedly shoved, or while encountering shifting terrain (such as on a boat or moving train) is a skill that most robots haven’t mastered. Nevertheless, one lab in Italy has created a humanoid robot that comes very close to matching our skill at avoiding taking a spill. (Video)

The Delight – an automated public toilet system being installed throughout India

The Delight

It’s a hard job in developed countries to maintain a safe, clean network of public toilets is where most people have other places to go to the bathroom. In countries like India, with limited facilities and a big “floating population,” it’s doubly difficult. Facilities easily get damaged and misused, and quickly become no-go places. (Video)

Bitcoin, launched in 2009 by an anonymous developer, is an intriguing technological and financial experiment. Quartz reports, there has been a recent spike in value (approximately 1,300% since the beginning of the 2013).  Starting your own currency is “not as complicated as it sounds. How advanced mapping technology can change the world

Advanced mapping technology has let one aid organization in Africa see more clearly the scope of the problems it’s trying to fix.

A good mapping app can be appreciated by everyone.  Look what happened to Apple when it failed at providing a good mapping application. Maps save us from getting lost, ensure that we get to locations on time, and guide us through complicated public transportation systems. And in some places, they can save lives. Just ask World Vision, a humanitarian organization focused on poverty and justice.

3D printers allow people to print guns, but just because we have the ability to do so doesn’t mean that we have to.  But, of course, there will be someone who is going to do it. And that somebody isn’t just going to print their own guns, but they’re going to make it their cause, and devote their time and energy to making sure other people can too. That person, in America today, is 25-year-old Cody R. Wilson.

BionicOpter – a hyper-realistic dragonfly drone

BionicOpter

The BionicOpter was created by German automation company Festo. It was designed to mimic the look and flying dynamics of a dragonfly. The 1.5-foot-long ultra-light flying robot operates via remote control from a smartphone and can maneuver and hover in place just like a real dragonfly. Each of the robot’s four wings operate independently using servo motors, allowing each wing to be twisted by up to 90 degrees. (Video)
