HPN wants better predictive health care.

It’s almost as if Heritage Provider Network set out to create the perfect story by mashing up all of our favorite things: clever algorithms, a multi-million dollar intellectual competition, and the future. The California-based health care provider has put up a purse of $3 million for the person or group who can come up with a predictive algorithm that accurately identifies people at risk for hospitalization in the next year, thus encouraging predictive medical measures and reducing unnecessary hospital stays.

Hands-Free Faucets More Contaminated with Bacteria Than Conventional Faucets

hands-freefaucets

Hands-free faucets germier than manual ones.

One of the main justifications for hands-free faucets may have just been taken through the wringer by a recent Johns Hopkins School of Medicine report. While one might reasonably expect manual faucets to be germier than those of the hands-free variety on account of all sorts of grubby hands coming into contact with the handle, the team in fact concluded that the opposite may be the case.

Lady Gaga Launches Fashion Line Made from Discarded Meat

Flying Gaga, Now in Bacon Flavor.

Pop icon Lady Gaga will launch a line of meat-based clothing this Fall using food waste. The line will be a “contemporary interpretation of her stage outfits,” according to the Haus of Gaga.

Exactly what that means remains unclear but I suggest you don’t wear the clothing camping (or store them in a bear box if you do). Unlike her infamous meat dress, the line will actually be…clothing. And unlike her meat dress, it comes PeTA-approved. Yes, PeTA approved!

Exposure to Violence Increases Aggression in Children: Studies

video game study

Monkey See, Monkey Do when it comes to children and violence.

Two world-wide studies published within a year of each other have looked at the increase of violence among children. They came, not surprisingly, to the same conclusion, one which seems like common sense to many of us, but which has been challenged time and time again by propagandists for TV and video game manufacturers.  The conclusion? Violence begets violence, no matter where it comes from.

‘Litte Emperor’ Syndrome – China Struggling with Growing Obesity as Economy Sky Rockets

Is Your Meat Made With Meat Glue?

composite meat product Picture-2-475x356

If you see “composite meat product” on the label, it might be fish slurry slapped together with an enzyme from cow’s blood.

Almost every country in the EU last week approved the use of Meat Glue in food. Technically called thrombian, or transglutaminase (TG), it is an enzyme that food processors use to hold different kinds of meat together.

Imitation crab meat is one of the more common applications: it’s made from surimi, a “fish-based food product” made by pulverizing white fish like pollock or hake into a paste, which is then mixed with meat glue so that the shreds stick together and hold the shape wanted for it by its creator…

Trees Cocooned in Spiders Webs Reducing Risk of Malaria in Pakistan

Spiders web trees 23456

Wow. Now that’s a lot of spiders!

Millions of spiders have crawled into trees in Pakistan to escape flood waters, shrouding them with their silky webs. The eye-catching phenomenon is an unexpected side-effect of last year’s flooding which claimed the lives of almost 2,000 people.

However, since the monsoon weather devastated the nation last July, much of the water has still not yet receded. The tiny insects have sought refuge amongst the trees weaving beautifully intricate webs between the leaves. The branches are now so cocooned in spiders webs it gives the appearance of them being shrouded in a large net…
