The Russian Fund for Perspective Research has performed tests on 3D printed bullets. According to the organization, the additive manufactured ammunition performed in a similar manner to traditionally made bullets.
Last week, the director of the Federal Aviation Administration reported that his department is receiving an average of 2,000 new registration requests for drones every day, and that it has registered up to some half a million drones since new rules went into effect in January. But as sales of drones have increased, so too have other more worrying numbers. The FAA also says it receives more than 100 reports per month of drones flying around airports and other forbidden places, where they could damage infrastructure or accidentally collide with the engine of a landing airplane.
An unmanned robotic speedboat dubbed ‘Bladerunner’ is being trialled by the Royal Navy in secret tests that could revolutionize maritime warfare.
The high-speed vessel, which will take to the River Thames in London today for tests, is designed to carry out surveillance operations and does not carry weapons.
A tweet posted last week by Peter Singer, a co-author of the book Ghost Fleet and a strategist at the New America Foundation, shows his book couched up against what appears to be a Battelle DroneDefender anti-drone rifle in a tent at Fire Base Bell outside Makhmour, Iraq.
Designer and entrepreneur Massoud Hassani hopes to rid the planet of its estimated 100 million buried land mines within 10 years. That’s why several years ago, he developed the Mine Kafon – a device that rolls across minefields like a tumbleweed, tripping mines as it goes. While it’s a clever idea, he still wanted something that works faster. To that end, he is now developing the Mine Kafon Drone.
One hundred portable drone jammers are being bought by the U.S. Government. The jammer affect the radio control of the drone causing them to hover in place and land. The jammers are being used to protect government facilities, property, and personnel.
The U.S. military’s unmanned vessel “Sea Hunter” has begun testing. A self-driving 40-metre ship designed to travel out at sea without a single crewmember. The ship has potential to revolutionize the commercial shipping industry, making it the first step to sending unmanned cargo ships to other countries.
A new program named “Gremlins” is DARPA’s new strategy for gathering intelligence, radar jamming, and other “friendly” operations over unfriendly skies. The program aims to deploy swarms of several, reusable drones, that are relatively inexpensive and lightweight, from aircraft or other platforms.
This 130-foot drone ship from DARPA is almost ready to roam the open seas. The drone has already begun its speed testing has reached its expected top speed of 31 mph. However, drone does more than cruise around the ocean, it also has the ability to detect foreign submarines, including the stealthy diesel electric silent ones.Continue reading… “DARPA has begun speed testing its submarine-hunting drone ship”
A submarine’s periscope is a useful tool, however it puts the vessel at risk since it can only be used when the sub surfaces. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have created a waterproof drone that can float up from the murky depths and then take to the skies.
Ronald C. Arkin: I’ve been engaged in the debate over autonomous robotic military systems for almost 10 years. I am not averse to a ban, but I’m convinced we should continue researching this technology for the time being. One reason is that I believe such systems might be capable of reducing civilian casualties and property damage when compared to the performance of human warfighters. Thus, it is a contention that calling for an outright ban on this technology is premature, as some groups already are doing.
