China is ‘financially out of control’ according to Citi’s chief economist

Citigroup’s chief economist, Willem Buiter,  sees a storm brewing in China. He estimated that there is a 55 percent chance of a made-in-China global recession in the not too distant future, which he defines as a period of sub-2 percent global growth.

Apps, app stores and Apple could cause the demise of the cable industry

Benedict Evans, a veteran mobile industry analyst turned venture capitalist, tweeted a chart  on September 3, 2015, showing how traditional TV is losing its share of screen to smartphones and tablets. While Evans’ chart was not the first chart to alarm the cable industry, its timing was particularly interesting, as it came exactly a week before Apple’s major update of its Apple TV hardware. In fact, many financial and industry analysts have predicted the demise of the cable industry since rumors of a new Apple TV hardware or an Apple over-the-top streaming service emerged earlier this year.

Top 10 colleges in the U.S. with the biggest application drops

This fall, more than 20 million students are expected to return to college, a 24 percent increase from 2000. Still, the enrollment surge doesn’t mean that all colleges have gotten more popular. Some expensive private colleges have experienced significant drops in the number of high school seniors applying, according to a recent report. Elite Boston College has suffered the biggest plunge.

According to Ericsson ConsumerLab’s annual TV & Media report, Digital streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are not the main reason broadband users are ditching pay-TV packages. The report reveals that almost half of broadband household users globally are cutting the cord because they are fed up with shelling out high prices for pay-TV packages. The report highlights what cord cutters value when paying for subscriptions and reaffirms the ways cable companies can draw TV defectors back in.
