Novel brain implant helps paralyzed woman speak using a digital avatar

Emerging speech neuroprostheses may offer a way to communicate for people who are unable to speak due to paralysis or disease, but fast, high-performance decoding has not yet been demonstrated. Now, transformative new work by researchers at UCSF and UC Berkeley shows that more natural speech decoding is possible using the latest advances in artificial intelligence.

Led by UCSF neurosurgeon Edward Chang, the researchers have developed an implantable AI-powered device that, for the first time, translates brain signals into modulated speech and facial expressions. As a result, a woman who lost the ability to speak due to a stroke was able to speak and convey emotion using a talking digital avatar. The researchers describe their work in a study published today (Wednesday, Aug. 23) in the journal Nature.

IBM’s Watsonx Code Assistant: Transforming Legacy COBOL with AI-Powered Java

COBOL, a language over six decades old and mainly engineered by retired or deceased architects, still underpins hundreds of billions of lines of code in global production systems. IBM, keen on preserving these legacy functions on its Z mainframe systems, has embarked on an ambitious endeavor: rewriting this extensive COBOL codebase in Java. A few years ago, humans were tasked with this colossal undertaking, but now IBM is turning to AI to expedite the process.

Enter the IBM Watsonx Code Assistant, slated for release in Q4 of this year. This innovative tool aims to keep human expertise in the loop while leveraging generative AI to analyze, refactor, and test the new object-oriented code. Importantly, it’s not an all-or-nothing approach; IBM asserts that code generated by Watsonx should seamlessly interoperate with COBOL and specific Z mainframe functions.

AI-Powered Proteins: A New Era of Shape-Shifting Biological ‘Transistors’

Proteins, often envisioned as static 3D structures, are far from being rigid sculptures. In reality, many proteins possess the remarkable ability to transform, altering their shapes to meet specific biological demands. Some configurations can transmit harmful signals during events like strokes or heart attacks, while others act as safeguards, limiting the molecular fallout. Essentially, proteins function as biological transistors, governing the body’s molecular “computer” that responds to internal and external cues. Scientists have long explored these shape-shifting proteins to unravel the mysteries of our physiological processes.

But what if we could engineer entirely novel biological “transistors” from scratch, independent of nature’s constraints? This question has led to the intersection of artificial intelligence and biology, marking a profound shift in our understanding of proteins and their potential applications.

Goldman Sachs Report: Asia’s Rise and Latin America’s Challenges in Shifting Global Economic Power

A recent report from Goldman Sachs has unveiled a remarkable projection: a significant shift in the balance of global economic power over the coming decades. According to analysts, Asia, led by China and India, is poised to potentially outshine the conventional economic giants grouped within the Developed Markets (DM) category, altering the landscape of world GDP contributions.

In a visually striking representation of Goldman Sachs’ real GDP forecasts for 2050, a voronoi diagram illustrates this transformative shift. The projections suggest that Asia, excluding Developed Markets, will account for a substantial 40% of the global GDP share, narrowly edging out Developed Markets’ anticipated 36%. This stands in stark contrast to the scenario half a century ago in 2000 when Developed Markets represented a dominating 77% of global GDP.

Breaking Boundaries: The Quest for High-Speed Space Travel and Interstellar Exploration

For nearly sixty years, humanity has gazed skyward with a burning desire to escape the confines of our planet, much like a person yearning to break free from an indoor space. Despite nearly 60 years of the space age, only a handful of astronauts have been fortunate enough to venture beyond Earth’s atmosphere. The balcony of our world, known as low Earth orbit, has been graced by a mere few hundred astronauts, while an even smaller group, a mere thirty individuals, have touched the surface of our celestial house-garden – the Moon. Among this elite group, a mere dozen have had the privilege of walking upon its ancient surface.

While a few unmanned spacecraft have managed to journey to our neighboring planets – Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn – only three have embarked on longer voyages into the cosmos. The Voyager spacecraft, launched in the late 1970s, now reside on the fringes of our solar system. In 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft provided humanity with unprecedented images of Pluto, and in the current decade, it may even venture to the edge of our solar system. Yet, the grandeur of our solar system pales in comparison to the vast expanse of the cosmic tapestry that stretches across the universe.

Experimental Drug Shows Promise in Mitigating Weight Gain and Liver Health Impacts

Researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) have unveiled an experimental drug that successfully curbed weight gain and protected liver health in mice subjected to a high-sugar, high-fat diet throughout their lives.

The newly developed small-molecule drug, known as CPACC, emerged from a comprehensive effort led by UT Health San Antonio to tackle mitochondrial abnormalities linked to conditions like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. CPACC operates by regulating the entry of magnesium into mitochondria, the cell components responsible for energy production and calorie burning.

Madesh Muniswamy, molecular biochemist at UT Health San Antonio and senior author of the study, emphasized, “These findings are the result of several years of work.”

AI-Enhanced Solar-Powered Electric Motors: A Leap Towards Grid Independence

Researchers at the Odisha University of Technology and Research in India have achieved a significant breakthrough by developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered model for direct current (DC) electric motors fueled by photovoltaic arrays. These innovative motors operate without the need for grid-based charging, offering a sustainable and independent power solution. The applications of such solar-powered electric motors span from home appliances to industrial operations, and even electric vehicles, as reported by IEEE Spectrum.

Advancing Clean Energy Adoption Solar-powered electric motors present an opportunity to transition electrical devices to cleaner energy sources while reducing dependency on the grid. Typically, this setup requires a battery to store excess energy generated by solar cells, ensuring power availability during periods of limited sunlight. Traditional DC motors have exhibited energy efficiencies of up to 80 percent in real-world applications. However, through the integration of AI-optimized solar arrays, the Indian researchers managed to achieve efficiency levels of up to 88 percent. Furthermore, the team enhanced efficiency by introducing a regenerative braking system. This innovation allows the motor’s battery to recharge using energy recovered during braking.
