Scientists invent injectable oxygen that will let you live without breathing

You may soon breathe underwater by injecting oxygen into your bloodstream.

Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital have designed microparticles that can be injected into your bloodstream to quickly oxygenate your body. Even if you can’t/aren’t breathing. And it can keep people alive for 15 to 30 minutes. It’s one of the best medical breakthroughs in recent years, and one that could save millions of lives every year.

Fantastic Voyage type wireless devices travel through your bloodstream to fix you up

wireless device

A wireless medical device can move through the bloodstream controlled by a magnetic field.

Eventually, implantable medical devices will be able to dispense drugs, get rid of blood clots and perform micro-surgeries inside our bodies.  But powering these devices could be problematic. The point is to have minimally invasive gadgets keeping tabs on our health, cutting patients open to swap out their batteries is not an ideal situation. (Video)

How Nanotechnology May Be Damaging Our Lungs

How Nanotechnology May Be Damaging Our Lungs

Nanomaterials may cause damage to the lungs

In 2006, The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars published a warning and a challenge to the scientific community about its responsible use and handling of nanomaterials, as they were known to cause damage to the lungs.  Now, research conducted at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, has unveiled how the damage occurs and a possible means of control.

Transplanted Stem Cells Undo Birth Defects

Transplanted Stem Cells Undo Birth Defects

Neural stem cells, tagged green with a fluorescent dye, have been transplanted among the brain cells (red) of a mouse born with brain damage after its mother was given heroin during pregnancy.

By injecting stem cells directly into the brain, scientists have successfully reversed neural birth defects in mice whose mothers were given heroin during pregnancy. Even though most of the transplanted cells did not survive, they induced the brain’s own cells to carry out extensive repairs.

2008 International Science And Engineering Visualization Challenge

2008 International Science And Engineering Visualization Challenge

 “Glass Forest”

The 2008 International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge has just concluded with some pretty astonishing imagery in the winning slots. This picture, dubbed “Glass Forest,” is a scanning electron micrograph of diatoms (weird unicellular algae) clinging to a marine worm, and won the photography category: to my eyes it looks half like a palm tree and half like a Star Trek effect. The illustration category winner is even more amazing.

Nano-sized “Cargo Ships” Developed To Carry Anti-Cancer Drugs And Markers Through The Body

Nano-sized “Cargo Ships” Developed To Carry Anti-Cancer Drugs And Markers Through The Body

The nanometer-sized cargo ships look individually like a chocolate-covered nut cluster, in which a biocompatible lipid forms the chocolate shell and magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots and the drug doxorubicin are the nuts.

Scientists have developed nanometer-sized ‘cargo ships’ that can sail throughout the body via the bloodstream without immediate detection from the body’s immune radar system and ferry their cargo of anti-cancer drugs and markers into tumors that might otherwise go untreated or undetected.

Japan’s Crazy IV Drip Cafe

Japan’s Crazy IV Drip Cafe

Vitamins always work better when they get shot straight into your bloodstream

Hard-working people suffer daily from exhaustion, insomnia, backaches and other minor ailments. Perhaps all they need is a dose of preventive medicine in the form of vitamins and other nutritional supplements.

On April 1, a private service, called Tenteki10, opened in Ebisu Garden Place, to provide “pick-me-ups” through IV drips. People can drop by without a reservation and take the 10-minute instillation right away.
