This satellite image shows white Antarctic ice stained brown by Emperor penguin guano  

Satellite images have picked up giant red-brown stains on the pristine white sea ice, indicating the presence of thousands of penguins.

It meant that researchers for the British Antarctic Survey were able to locate every colony on the continent for the first time ever.

Thought up by Italian architecture firm Studiomobile, vertical seawater farms sticking up out of the water could covert the salt-laden liquid into freshwater for crops. It’s all about producing humidity. A series of vents would gather humidity from the seawater to cool the greenhouses and, as it collects, irrigate the crops inside.  (Pics)

We’re stoked about that wave farm off the coast of Portugal, and now along comes another innovation that could top that: Searaser, a buoy-like device attached to the sea floor that uses wave power to pump water 650 feet uphill. When the energy is needed, that same water flows through a downhill pipe, powering a hydroelectric generator. This picture shows a small prototype, but its inventors say Searaser in its full-sized form could supply power to 470 houses.

Catholic nuns and priests in Italy are following their flocks to the beach this summer, establishing an inflatable church and a beach-convent in the sands to lure sunbathers.

The 30-metre long blow-up church – staffed by priests ready to take confession – will debut on Saturday on the Adriatic coast in the Molise region, an organizer said. (Pics)
