In a House Homeland Security oversight subcommittee hearing members of Congress raised concerns over the potential security risks posed by jamming and electronic hijacking of unmanned aerial systems, and the potential use of drones by terrorists.

The FBI and the Air Force have approval to fly drones.  But so does Herington, Kansas which has a population of 2,526 according to new documents that shed light on which government agencies are experimenting with the domestic use of unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones.

Congress ok’s bill that opens skies in U.S. to unmanned drones

Unmanned drones controlled by remote operators on the ground will fly in the same airspace as airliners, cargo planes, business jets and private aircraft.

A final congressional bill was approved Monday to speed the nation’s switch from radar to an air traffic control system based on GPS technology, and to open U.S. skies to unmanned drone flights within four years.

In 2006 United Airlines Flight 1015 was picking up speed while rolling down the runway at Chicago O’Hare.  But at around 10 p.m. on that clear summer evening  the pilots saw something heart-stopping on the runway: an Atlas Air 747 cargo plane moving directly into its path. Unable to abort takeoff, the United pilot made a split-second decision to turn sharply. The planes avoided impact by a mere 120 feet.

The weakened skills have contributed to hundreds of deaths in airline crashes in the last five years.
