Momentum Machines is cooking up burgers with a robot and they’re serious about fast food productivity. “Our device isn’t meant to make employees more efficient,” cofounder Alexandros Vardakostas has said. “It’s meant to completely obviate them.”

China breaks ground on world’s largest radio telescope

FAST

3D model of FAST

Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory has the world’s largest radio telescope but not for long.  China has broken ground on the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), a massive bowl-shaped radio signal collector that will be the world’s most sensitive when it opens for business in 2016.

Navy Tests New Railgun

Freaking Awesome

The Navy is hoping that their newest 10 megajoule railgun (topping their old pathetic 9 megajoule) will replace the standard 5-inch guns on most of their ships. Projectiles fired at this energy level reach about 5,600 mph, but the Navy isn’t stopping there. They have their eyes set on a 64 megajoule system capable of shooting at over 13,000 mph and hitting 5 meter targets from 200 nautical miles. Videos after the jump.

Smart Grids, Fast Charging – Infrastructure for Electric Cars

Smart Grids, Fast Charging - Infrastructure for Electric Cars
Is this a picture of what the future of plug-in vehicle charging might look?

There are 54 million garages for the 247 million registered cars in the US, meaning that the majority of cars are parked overnight in parking structures, parking lots or curbside. As a result, most potential plug-in vehicle consumers do not have an adequate place to charge their vehicles. This problem is even more pronounced in urban areas like San Francisco, where only about 16% of cars are parked in garages overnight and the rest end up curbside or in parking lots.

Trans-Atlantic Supersonic Maglev Vacuum Tube Train

Trans-Atlantic Supersonic Maglev Vacuum Tube Train
Piece of cake.  No serious engineering needed here

The idea is as wondrous as it is audacious: Get on a train at New York City’s Penn Station and hit Paris, London or Brussels just an hour later. “From an engineering point of view there are no serious stumbling blocks,” says Ernst Frankel, retired professor of ocean engineering at MIT.
