Scientists in the the U.S. say the have “grown” a kidney in the laboratory and it has been transplanted into animals where it started to produce urine.  Similar techniques to make simple body parts have already been used in patients, but the kidney is one of the most complicated organs made so far.

First Implantable Artificial Kidney Could Work as Well as a Living Organ

The artificial kidney will be the size of a coffee cup. Blood will be pumped through microscopic filters using the body’s own blood pressure.

An artificial kidney that would be implanted inside the body and work as well as a living organ is just around the corner, scientists have revealed.  U.S researchers have just unveiled the first prototype model of the device, that could eliminate the need for dialysis.

Kidney Failure With A Surprise Ending.

A girl left seriously ill when both her kidneys failed astounded medical experts by growing two new ones. Angel Burton from Louth, Lincolnshire, suffered from painful kidney infections from birth to the point where she required surgery at the age of five.

But surgeons were amazed to discover the little girl had four kidneys, with two new fully formed organs sitting on top of her old ones. And the new ones had taken over the role of the others, meaning she was effectively ‘cured’ of kidney failure.

Doctors Perform Windpipe Transplant With Stem Cells

Doctors have given a woman a new windpipe with tissue grown from her own stem cells, eliminating the need for anti-rejection drugs. “This technique has great promise,” said Dr. Eric Genden, who did a similar transplant in 2005 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. That operation used both donor and recipient tissue. Only a handful of windpipe, or trachea, transplants have ever been done.
