Medical inkjet printer could one day print living tissue on demand

Do you need an artery for bypass surgery or custom cartilage for that worn-out knee?  One day you will be able to print an artery.

Biomedical engineers in about a dozen major university and corporate laboratories are working on ways to print living human tissue. There is the hope of one day producing personalized body parts and implants on demand. Still far from clinical use, these tissue-engineering experiments represent the next step in a process known as computerized adaptive manufacturing, in which industrial designers turn out custom prototypes and finished parts using inexpensive 3-D computer printers.

Oxygen injections could save lives when when patients can’t breathe

Oxygen

Oxygenating blood with microparticles.

Patients who can’t breathe need oxygen quickly to avoid cardiac arrest and brain injury is a big problem. Unfortunately, attempts in the early 1900s to intravenously supply this essential gas failed to oxygenate the blood and often caused dangerous air bubbles. Current treatments, such as blood substitutes, breathing masks, and tubes, aren’t always effective as well since they still rely on the lungs to function or require time to properly administer.

Fantastic Voyage type wireless devices travel through your bloodstream to fix you up

wireless device

A wireless medical device can move through the bloodstream controlled by a magnetic field.

Eventually, implantable medical devices will be able to dispense drugs, get rid of blood clots and perform micro-surgeries inside our bodies.  But powering these devices could be problematic. The point is to have minimally invasive gadgets keeping tabs on our health, cutting patients open to swap out their batteries is not an ideal situation. (Video)

Artificial skin spun from spider silk

Spider silk could be an ideal answer for helping heal wounds.

Researchers may have found a better alternative for providing skin grafts to wounds.  It turns out that spider silk is legendary for its strength, as well as its possible healing properties. Tissue engineer Hanna Wendt at Medical School Hannover in Germany honed in on this and found that by creating an artificial skin spun from spider silk, we could have an ideal answer for helping heal wounds.

World’s first man-made organ transplant carried out in Sweden

Windpipe

An image released by Karolinska University Hospital shows part of the operation.

The world’s first transplant of a fully synthetic organ has been carried out by surgeons – a windpipe created using the patient’s stem cells and an artificial “scaffold”.  A month ago a 36-year-old cancer patient received the organ at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.
