Stretching before exercising could be harmful

Want a better work-out? Then don’t stretch beforehand, some experts say. Many people take it for granted that they should start their exercise routines with some stretching on the spot, perhaps hoping it will loosen them up for their work-out. Most fitness experts now agree this kind of static stretching before exercise is not just counter-productive, but potentially harmful.

exercise-pain-199x300

Exercise pain happens to everyone.

Early exercise discomfort happens to everyone. But fear of those initial sensations can cause people to play it safe.  In the world of fitness, practice doesn’t just make you perfect, it also makes you more comfortable.  As you first dig into a new fitness regimen, as many people do this time of year, the discomfort of exercise can be, well, uncomfortable. The burning muscles and gasping for breath can feel desperate.

Tiny Implants Connected To Nerve Cells Could Allow Greater Control Of Prosthetics

myotubes_x220

Muscle cells (shown here) are grown on a biological scaffold.

A novel implant seeded with muscle cells could better integrate prosthetic limbs with the body, allowing amputees greater control over robotic appendages. The construct, developed at the University of Michigan, consists of tiny cups, made from an electrically conductive polymer, that fit on nerve endings and attract the severed nerves. Electrical signals coming from the nerve can then be translated and used to move the limb.

Men With Big Muscles Are 40% Less Likely To Die From Cancer

Men With Big Muscles Are 40% Less Likely To Die From Cancer

Men who pump iron are 40% less likely to die from cancer than men who do not pump iron

Men with stronger muscles from regular weight training are up to 40 per cent less likely to die from cancer than men who do not pump iron, according to new research.  The findings, by an international team of researchers, suggest muscular strength is as important as staying slim and eating healthily when it comes to protecting the body against deadly tumors.

Scienstists Developing Robootic Octopus To Sovle Mysteries Of The Sea

Sea Life Of Fondo Marino de Palma de Mallorca

Scientists are developing a robotic octopus that will be able to search the seabed with the same extraordinary dexterity as the real eight-legged cephalopod. With no solid skeleton, the robot would be the world’s first entirely soft robot, say researchers.

Wearable Robotic Arm

Wearable Robotic Arm

Tail-wrist-II

Paraplegics and the elderly often face problems with their joints and muscle movements. When stuck to bed owing to their illness, patients tend to develop contraction of muscles that could be irreversible, and regular range of motion exercises through physiotherapy is the only alternative left. There are a few muscle and joint extractors available to assist, but Tail-wrist-II seems to be a novel makeover in the category. Developed by Hideyuki Tsukakoshi, assistant professor of Mechanical Control Systems at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the Tail-wrist-II is designed to prevent contraction of muscles and joints.
