Nevada’s big bet on ‘shell’ secrecy

Nevada is a magnet for businesses seeking secrecy.

In Nevada, the business of registering businesses is booming and the consultants in this thriving industry, many who are former felons, are aiding companies in seeking to avoid liabilty and disclosure.  But many of these consultants are former felons.   All of this comes at a time when Washington is calling on other nations to enforce greater transparency of financial flows.

America’s Largest Solar Plant Opens in Nevada

Copper Mountain Solar Facility

While it is nowhere as large as Canada’s 80MW Sarnia Solar Project (which is the world’s largest PV plant), the US has just opened the country’s largest PV plant in Nevada. The 48MW Copper Mountain Solar Facility, initiated by Sempra Generation, began construction January this year and the facility was finished just a few weeks ago.

The Road to Area 51: After Decades of Denyial, Five Former Insiders Speak Out

Area51 sign 154234
Area 51. It’s the most famous military institution in the world that doesn’t officially exist. If it did, it would be found about 100 miles outside Las Vegas in Nevada’s high desert, tucked between an Air Force base and an abandoned nuclear testing ground.

Then again, maybe not– the U.S. government refuses to say. You can’t drive anywhere close to it, and until recently, the airspace overhead was restricted–all the way to outer space. Any mention of Area 51 gets redacted from official documents, even those that have been declassified for decades.

It has become the holy grail for conspiracy theorists, with UFOlogists positing that the Pentagon reverse engineers flying saucers and keeps extraterrestrial beings stored in freezers…

Who Was Del Webb?

Del Webb 874

Del Webb had friends in high places and low, and was not yet sure where he should count Ben Siegel, his new client. Webb, a Phoenix construction man with a can-do reputation, had taken on an unfinished Nevada hotel as a favor to a banker friend with serious money at stake. Before he knew it he found himself bound by contract to a man of doubtful repute.

And before very long, Siegel would remove all doubts. Siegel bragged that he had personally killed 12 people. Now another mob figure was getting under his skin. “I’m going to kill that S.O.B. too,” Siegel added.

Webb’s face must have reflected his shock, for Siegel then reassured him:

“Del, don’t worry. We only kill each other.”

Webb walked a thin and dangerous line with Siegel, but it was all in a life’s work. Construction contracting was inherently risky. Somebody in his company once pointed out that it was a business where things do not even out. Bid too low, you lose money. Bid too high, you don’t even get the job.

10,000 Year Clock To Be Built On Nevada Mountaintop

10,000 Year Clock To Be Built On Nevada Mountaintop

If you’re a member of the Long Now Foundation, you think about vast spans of time. That’s why the futurist think tankers put a 0 before every year to show how cool and forward-thinking they are (for example, this year is 02008). They’ve decided to build a huge mechanical clock on a piece of Nevada mountaintop property they bought, and they’re saying the symbolic time-counting monument will last 10,000 years, chosen because that’s “about how long humans have had a stable climate and technological progression.”
