Designer Gyula Bodonyi has harnessed the power of green algae in a light bulb. Algae projects have already been seen powering power entire buildings, but Bodonyi’s concept brings green power to the public on a more user-friendly scale. With the Algaebulb, algae powers a single LED activated by a tiny air pump and hydrophobic material able to create a teeny-tiny power house for light. (photos)

The Water Discus Hotel – an underwater hotel in Dubai

The Water Discus in Dubai is one of the latest projects in an underwater hotel. The hotel comprises two discs – an underwater and above-water one. This combination will allow guests to admire the depths of the ocean while making the most of the warm climate. (Video and photos)

Jiadang (Family Stuff) is a project by Chinese photographer Huang Qingjun that shows Chinese families posing next to all of their worldly possessions. He spent almost ten years traveling around to various rural communities in China, asking families to take everything they owned and carefully arrange them outdoors for a picture. (Photos)

Printing Australia’s largest solar cells

Flexible solar cells.

The Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (VICOSC), CSIRO, and the University of Melbourne has developed a new printer that has allowed researchers at the university to print solar cells up to the size of an A3 sheet of paper.  The solar cell printer makes renewable energy even easier to source.

Airplane flies across U.S. powered by sunshine

Solar Impulse

The goal of Solar Impulse is to fly around the world using no fuel other than sunlight. But before the solar plane circumnavigates the globe they will fly across the U.S. Solar Impulse took off on May 3 proving that airplanes can fly long distances on nothing more than sunshine. (Photos)

One billion people of the world’s population lives in informal communities – sometimes known as shantytowns, tent cities or, if you’re really going for the jugular, slums.
