Propecia and Avodart linked to irreversible sexual side effects.

Drugs frequently prescribed to treat hair loss or an enlarged prostate may contribute to irreversible sexual dysfunction in men, new research finds.  Use of dutasteride (Avodart) and finasteride (Proscar and Propecia) were linked to erectile dysfunction, depression and loss of libido in a review of existing studies.

Male-Pattern Baldness An Indicator Of Heart And Prostate Disease In Men

Male-Pattern Baldness An Indicator Of Heart And Prostate Disease In Men

Male-pattern baldness increases risk of heart and prostate disease

When considering men’s health there is good evidence to suggest that baldness may be an indicator of both heart and prostate disease.  When compared to men with no hair loss at all, the risk of heart disease increased by 9 percent.  When a bald spot appears on the crown, relative risk jumps to 23 percent.  When all hair is gone from the top of the head, the risk rises by a worrisome 36 percent (Info from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School).  According to Australian researcher, men with bold spots at the top of their heads were 1 ½ times more likely to have moderate to high-grade prostate cancer before age 70 than those without such bald spots.

Ten Minute Blood Test To Identify Cancer Proteins

Ten Minute Blood Test To Identify Cancer Proteins

A microfluidic chip identifies 35 proteins in a drop of blood within 10 minutes.

Measuring proteins in the blood can help doctors determine patients’ cancer risk and monitor the health of the elderly and people with chronic diseases. But current methods for testing these proteins are too expensive and require too much blood to be performed regularly. A microfluidic chip in clinical trials does on a single chip in 10 minutes what normally takes multiple technicians hours to do–and with just a single drop of blood. Researchers hope to make bedside diagnostics based on blood proteins a reality by bringing down the cost of such tests by at least an order of magnitude.

Prostate Research

A team of scientist from San Francisco has been successful in growing new prostate glands in mice with the aid of stem cell technology, a breakthrough that may cast light on how prostate tumors develop.

The team from San Francisco were able to isolate single cells with the ability to generate an entire prostate. During the study, the researchers isolated and transplanted back into mice a type of stem cell that divides to form different cell types in the prostate gland, located near the bladder.

Vitamin D And Sun Exposure Play A Role In Disease Prevention

Vitamin D And Sun Exposure Play A Role In Disease Prevention

The sun is a natural and effective source of Vitamin D that we need to protect our bones, protect us from auto-immune diseases, help prevent Alzheimers disease, and protect us from certain kinds of cancers. Deficiencies in vitamin D are highly-linked to these diseases. Now, researchers at Emory University School of Medicine have found that Vitamin D deficiency is also linked to Parkinson’s Disease.
