The Target hack shows our payment systems are in big trouble.

The problems with debit and credit cards are no longer about high-tech skimmers at gas stations and restaurants.  Things have gotten worse, not better. According to a December 19 update on the Target problem by security reporter Brian Krebs, as many as “40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been impacted between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013.” After first claiming that ATM PINs weren’t involved, Target later conceded they were stolen, too.

Halo Bike Lock Texts You When Your Bike Is Stolen

Summer. It’s a time of sun, fun, bikinis and…bike thieves. This concept from designer Steve Hunt looks just like a halo. It’s designed so that the connector cable is housed within the frame of the lock itself, which makes it harder for thieves to cut your cable.The coolest feature however, is that Hunt wants to have an integrated wireless card inserted into the lock itself, so that when your bike gets stolen, the lock will notify you.

 In PART 1 of this series, we saw the first round of what seems to be turning into a dastardly trend. Now, Brian Krebs continues to scare the pants off of us with his ongoing series on sophisticated ATM skimmers (devices that capture your card number, working with a hidden camera to catch your PIN). His slideshow of next-gen skimmers has us convinced that there’s no way we would notice a skimmer on an ATM that I was using: “According to Doten, the U.S. Secret Service estimates that annual losses from ATM fraud totaled about $1 billion in 2008, or about $350,000 each day. Card skimming, where the fraudster affixes a bogus card reader on top of the real reader, accounts for more than 80 percent of ATM fraud, Doten said.”

Brazil has a really big problem with car theft. In fact, the criminals and drug dealers that steal most of the cars take them to areas so dangerous, that the police will simply cut deals with the gangs to get the stolen cars back. Now however, there are plans to use technology to stop the criminals in their tracks.
