They have built terminal 3 of Singapore’s airport and the The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line aka Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway. Aqualine is a bridge–tunnel combination across Tokyo Bay in Japan. It connects the city of Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture with the city of Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture, and forms part of National Route 409. With an overall length of 14 km, it includes a 4.4 km bridge and 9.6 km tunnel underneath the bay—the fourth-longest underwater tunnel in the world.

SeaOrbiter – a spaceship-like floating lab that could be exploring our oceans by 2016

SeaOrbiter

Surprisingly, we know little about Earth’s oceans despite covering more than 70% of our planet’s surface. With more than 95% of the world’s underwater realm unexplored, scientists know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars than the bottom of the ocean. Due to intense pressures and poor visibility, the deep ocean is an extremely challenging place to study. But that could be set to change in the not too distant future, thanks to a pioneering architect’s ambitious project which will see a $50 million floating laboratory take to the seas.

Gravity map exposes mysteries of the deep oceans

gravity model

The gravity model of the North Atlantic ocean basin reveals tectonic history in sharp detail.

It’s like someone pulled a plug in the oceans and drained them away as a sea-floor map has exposed thousands of never-before-seen underwater mountains and ridges. The map was generated by the highest-resolution gravity model ever made for the oceans and will guide deep-sea research for years to come. (Video)

Underwater Turbines Could Harness a Massive Amount of Energy from the Mississippi

mississippi-river

Underwater turbines could tap the Mississipi’s power.

Tens of thousands of turbines anchored to the bottom of the Mississippi River could someday provide more than a gigawatt of renewable energy, enough to power a quarter of a million homes. That’s the vision of Free Flow Power, a startup based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, that recently received preliminary permits from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granting it the right to explore energy production at dozens of sites along the lower Mississippi over the next three years.

Seaventures – An Old Oil Rig Turned Into a Hotel for Scuba Divers

oil rig hotel

The Seaventures Dive Resort

A onetime oil-drilling rig stands in crystal-clear waters dotted with tiny islands and their lush green hills. But most impressive is what’s underwater—an amazing array of coral reefs swarming with hundreds of species of multicolored tropical fish, sea turtles and other aquatic life. The rig has been converted to a hotel for snorkelers and especially for scuba divers.

Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Up until now, the story of the Gulf Oil Spill has mostly told through pictures and harrowing stories. But after weeks of delaying the inevitable, BP has relented and posted video of the main leak (hat tip, Kevin Grandia). The oil company even kicked in a suspenseful clip of the giant containment dome being lowered onto the site. (Videos)
