Bionic Bird: A flying bird-shaped drone controlled with your smartphone

New microscope captures ultra-high-resolution movies of live 3D biomolecules

A new imaging platform called a “lattice light sheet” developed by Nobel laureate Eric Betzig and colleagues at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus is a significant leap forward for light microscopy. It captures high-resolution images rapidly and minimizes damage to cells, so it can image the three-dimensional activity of molecules, cells, and embryos in fine detail over longer periods than was previously possible, according to the HHMI scientists. Microsoft Research revealed Illumiroom last year. Illumiroom used projectors to stretch the image on your TV to take over a whole wall. Now comes the sequel, RoomAlive. The new system can turn every surface in a room–from the floor to the couch cushions to your own skin–into a glowing screen that reacts to your movement. It’s as if your whole analog world has been digitized. And that digital world can see where you’re looking, pointing, and touching, and adapt itself accordingly. (Videos)

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge hits 1 billion YouTube views

Rita Ora does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

We can call this the summer of the Ice Bucket Challenge with videos of shivering people flooding social feeds around the world. And what a summer it was: we saw epic stunts, epic fails, quirky twists and a whole lot of celebrities. We learned a lot about the strange connections between famous people (Bill Gates knows Ryan Seacrest?). The IBC craze even resulted in a couple of marriage proposals. And it’s all in the name of charity: Since July 29, 2014 the ALS Foundation reported more than $115 million in Ice Bucket Challenge donations.

LittleBits’ BitLab is an app store for hardware

LittleBits has just announced something called the BitLab, a contest merged with a crowd sourced technology system that allows inventors to create new LittleBits blocks, upload them, and have them made and sold by the company. The system also includes a hardware development kit that allows anyone access to LittleBits’ custom magnetic snap-together leads. (Videos)

MIT cheetah robot can run and jump untethered across grass

MIT cheetah robot

Researchers at MIT have developed an algorithm for bounding that they’ve successfully implemented in a robotic cheetah. The robot sprinted up to 10 mph, even continuing to run after clearing a hurdle in experiments done on an indoor track. The MIT researchers estimate that the current version of the robot may eventually reach speeds of up to 30 mph — half the top speed of the natural cheetah, the fastest land animal on Earth. (Videos)

Views for the top 100 YouTube channels have grown by 80.5% in the past year

YouTube’s  biggest star PewDiePie’s gaming videos were watched 439m times in July 2014 alone.

There are more than 1 billion viewers a month on YouTube. They watch 6bn hours of video, with nearly 40% of it watched on mobile devices. Its top channels are taking advantage.
