Men are only slightly funnier than women.
It’s not a joke. Men are really funnier than women – but, only to other men, says a study.
In the study, involving a test of writing captions to magazine cartoons, researchers at the University of California have found men received higher marks from male rather than female readers. They noted that men used swear words and sexual humor more often than women caption writers, which may have made their efforts a bit funnier.
However, they found that men edged out women by just 0.11 points when marks awarded on a scale of one to five were tallied up. Lead author Laura Mickes said, “The differences between men’s and women’s ability are so small that they can’t account for the strength of the belief in the stereotype.”
In the experiment, 16 male and 16 female students were told to write humorous captions in secret for 20 cartoons featured in the New Yorker magazine.
