90% of cars will be connected by 2020

Hands-free driving.

Many people dream of owning an autonomous car where they can relax with completely hands-free driving that is both seamless and safe, unlocking new time for us to work, talk, and learn while going from point A to point B.  According to a recent report from Telefónica Digital found the percentage of cars with built-in connectivity will jump from 10 percent today to 90 percent by 2020.

OLEV bus charged wirelessly by the road

Wireless online electric bus

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed an Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) bus that receives power wirelessly from electrical cables laid underneath the surface of the street using Shaped Magnetic Field in Resonance (SMFIR) technology. Two of the new buses have just hit the streets in the city of Gumi, South Korea. (Video)

Terrafugia Transition: Flying car completes first public demo flight

The Terrafugia Transition just fulfilled the dream of everyone who’s ever had a fantasy about the future. At the EAA AirVenture airshow in Wisconsin, the flying car completed two laps around the airfield — one on the pavement, and one in the air. The whole thing went off without a hitch, and even the namesake transition between laps worked smoothly. And, believe it or not, that just might mark the beginning of the era of the flying car. A self-balancing skateboard/Segway project

The twin wheeled skateboard works like a Segway.  Electric skateboards exist already with powered rear wheels, but the plan here was to build something like a Segway but in the form of a skateboard. It knows which way is “up” via a combination of gyroscope and and accelerometer sensors. (Videos)

It’s all about the eGallon when it comes to electric vehicles vs. hybrids

The first few full electric vehicles (EVs) have come to market over the last few years that consumers are actually interested in buying. Before that, the closest any car maker ever got was a hybrid vehicle. But as the cost of gasoline remains stubbornly high, EVsare becoming big business. The main reason for that is the stability of the eGallon — it averages just $1.18 while regular gasoline is sitting at $3.49.

Reaction Engine’s Skylon could fly anywhere in the world in 4 hours

What the Reaction Engines’ Skylon aircraft taking off will look like.

Reaction Engines, a British aerospace firm, is working on an aircraft it believes would be able to take passengers anywhere in the world in just four hours.  The vehicle would also be able to fly in outer space. (Video)

Mobileye raises $400 million to help put self-driving cars on the road before Google

Mobileye is competing with Google in the space of driverless technology.

Mobileye, a self-driving car startup, announced the closing of a $400M financing round by firms BlackRock, Fidelity Management, Wellington Management, Sailing Capital and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The round makes Mobileye the highest valued, privately held tech company in Israel with a total market value estimated at $1.5B.

For most Bay Area residents in California, commuting is a way of life.  Many people are used to an hour commute each way without traffic. Some people in the Bay Area even commute to Southern California several times a month, spending several hours each way either in the car or fighting through airports. What if there was an alternative to flights and car rides? If it was up to Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the Colorado company ET3, an answer could come sooner than we think.

World’s first solar-powered family car

Stella, solar-powered family car.

Eindhoven University of Technology students  have unveiled what they claim to be the world’s first solar-powered family car.  The vehicle is called Stella and it resembles a squashed, wingless airplane. The vehicle can seat four people and can travel up to 600 kilometers, powered by solar panels mounted on the roof.
