Smartphone attachment diagnoses cataracts

Catra can diagnose cataracts on your smartphone.

Researchers at MIT’s Media Lab have created a smartphone attachment called Catra that can diagnose cataracts in a matter of minutes. The screening tool is currently being tested on subjects.

Catra clips on to devices such as phones and iPods, and scans the lens of the eye to create a map of the position, size, shape and density of cataracts. “I like to think of this as a radar for the human eye,” says Ramesh Raskar, director of the MIT Media Lab’s Camera Culture group…

HOWTO clean LPs, DVDs, and CDs

REALLY close up of a vinyl groove.

I’ve recently picked up several old vinyl LPs at thrift stores and garage sales. My musical taste is very eclectic, but these discs have one big thing in common: they’re all filthy. Similarly, we have dozens of kids DVDs and CDs in our house coated in toddler goo that would almost certainly beat the adhesive that holds the tiles on the space shuttle. This weekend, I plan to brew up a cauldron of the cleaning solution used by the master preservationists at the Library of Congress. Or maybe I’ll just go with Ivory dish soap, warm water, and an old t-shirt. Anyway, here’s the LoC’s recipe..

Growing fake meat in a lab could cut greenhouse emissions by 96% according to scientists

Researchers hope to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by producing fake meat in a lab.

Scientists from Oxford University have decided to concentrate their efforts on culturing and growing artificial meat in petri dishes, Instead of focusing on ending the horrendous factory farming practices that inhumanely confine cattle to tight living spaces, and subject them to an unnatural diet of genetically-modified (GM) corn and soybeans.

Spam decreases 82% since last year

225 billion emails were sent per day in July 2010.

There was a whole lot less spam sent today than there was a year ago. The graphic above illustrates how there were more than 225 billion spam emails sent per day in July, 2010.  It also shows in June, 2011, that number has dropped to approximately 40 billion. That’s an 82.22% decrease in spam over a year.

Reno’s economy relies on gaming and tourism, two industries which have been hit extremely hard by the recession.

December 2007 is when the Great Recession officially began and it officially ended in July 2009. But that doesn’t mean the economy has returned to where it was before the steepest downturn since the Great Depression and may not for years. Employment is not expected to return to its pre-recession peak until 2014, according to a recent report by IHS Global Insight.
