Museum’s geodesic dome houses human-powered light show

The “Star-Turn” installation was made as part of a fundraising effort Help for Heroes, a charity for wounded war veterans. The installation featured a geodesic dome that protected riders of a static Specialized Sirrus bike, which when pedalled, would spin attached armatures mounted with a helix of tea light candles each.

World’s first desktop virtual reality design kit – Leonar3Do

IL CES Direct Feed

Some of the innovations at CES were basic and if you saw one of them you were going to see 20. Others jumped out and smacked you in the noggin because there were obvious landmark steps in a new direction. The Leonar3Do virtual reality design kit really captured our imagination and kept us thinking all day and night of the possibilities it was capable of…

Sounds Good – clever new hearing aid concept

soundsgood-500x706

A clever new hearing aid concept.

Sounds Good is a hearing aid that looks like cool high-tech earrings! The hearing aid amplifies sound for the wearer, and tiny “decorative” screens give feedback on the incoming sound. The speaker can see by the color and wave amplitude whether they are speaking too loudly, too softly, or too quickly.

Amazing coat hanger sculptures by David Mach

Coat hanger sculpture by David Mach.

Sometimes the items we use everyday seem dull and ordinary.  We never think that one day they might serve as material for an inspiring piece of art. Toasters, buttons and even eggshells have become quite impressive art pieces in the past, and predicting the materials that we’ll see used in the future is almost impossible. When it comes to pure creativity, artists who venture into the unknown have to be the most inspiring for aspiring artists today. Overlooking the obvious is nothing an artist should ever do it seems, and that becomes apparent when you find art pieces that border on the brink of madness. (Pics)

Staircase slide and bookcase staircase

Circular stairs were commonplace in castle towers during medieval times. Staircases were designed to go the same direction all the way around, ascending clockwise, to suit right-handed swordsmen for ease in hindering the attacker. Even today, stair-crafting ingenuity continues, with many staircases doubling for incredible feats of gravity and eye-popping works of art. (Pics)

Robots Suck At Scratching Vinyl

The DJs of the world can breathe a sigh of relief, because if this video is any indication, it’s going to be a long time before they’re in jeopardy of losing gigs to robots.

Watch in horror as this artificial turntablist lays down some of the worst beats I’ve ever heard from the wheels of steel. And that’s including my own feeble attempts on a friend’s 1200s.

Extreme grooming for animals

Punk Bird

Absolutely no photoshoppery involved here, no siree. I refuse to believe that punk bird is anything less than real, so I can’t tell you how Mladen Penev got animals to sit still long enough for impressive haircuts and mustache trims for ad agency Staudinger Franke and their client, the shavers and grooming equipment maker Braun.
