A tweet posted last week by Peter Singer, a co-author of the book Ghost Fleet and a strategist at the New America Foundation, shows his book couched up against what appears to be a Battelle DroneDefender anti-drone rifle in a tent at Fire Base Bell outside Makhmour, Iraq.

That’s why several years ago, he developed the Mine Kafon – a device that rolls across minefields like a tumbleweed, tripping mines as it goes. While it’s a clever idea, he still wanted something that works faster. To that end, he is now developing the Mine Kafon Drone.

Weaponized drone swarms will meet 60-kilowatt laser

Drones are fantastic as a hobby, however these small unmanned aerial vehicles pose a significant security threat when they fall into the wrong hands. A single weaponized drone is bad enough, but drone swarms are a security nightmare for military officials. Drones are difficult to spot when approaching, tough to follow on radar, and cannot be easily shot down using conventional weapons. In order to combat this potential threat, Lockheed Martin has developed a laser-based weapon that’ll blow such drones out of the sky.

One hundred portable drone jammers are being bought by the U.S. Government. The jammer affect the radio control of the drone causing them to hover in place and land.  The jammers are being used to protect government facilities, property, and personnel.

Packages already being delivered by drones in Germany

DHL has now sent over 100 packages with drones, while companies like amazon are still struggling with air restrictions. The trial stayed local in the Bavarian town of Reit im Winkl, a small town known for forestry and skiing. The residents would drop off packages at “packstation” at which point drones take over the rest of the shipping process.

Emergency organ transplant drones are on the horizon

EHang recently announced an agreement to deploy a fleet of passenger drones for the purpose of delivering organs to transplant patients. The Manufactured Organ Transport Helicopter (MOTH) will work with Maryland-based Lung Biotechnology PBC to customize the 184-drone to well suited for the task.
