The Gota’Go™ Personal Care Device for use when a bathroom break is not possible

GotaGo

Featured invention at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase 2011

The Gota’ Go Personal Care Device is a concealed, catheterlike device to accommodate, permit, and retain male urination in situations where a bathroom break is not possible or desirable. The design intent is that the Gota’ Go Personal Care Device would have wide application in situations ranging from male incontinence to law enforcement to long-haul trucking.

Electronic gardening kit

Click-and-Grow1

A whole new way to garden.

If there ever was a product that best demonstrated our increasing disconnect with nature, this one may be it. Click & Grow is an electronic gardening set that includes a soil-less pot, plant ‘cartridges’ and yep, even batteries. The premise is that people are either too busy or too much of a brownthumb to grow their own plants, so why not let some gadget do all the hard work?

Developed by an Estonian entrepreneur, Click & Grow is the result of a meshing of hydroponics and aeroponics, all reduced to a series of sensors, processors and software, which surround the seeds in the disposable cartridge…

‘Sticky boom’ – a sticky solution for grabbing objects in space

For one spacecraft to grab onto another spacecraft in space is a very challenging task. Although the robotic arms on the space shuttles and International Space Station (ISS) have made it look easy over the years, the process requires complex manipulator arms and special fixtures on the objects the arms are grasping, limiting the technology’s use. A small startup company is testing a new approach, though, that could greatly expand the applications of robotic arm technology to include, for example, cleaning up orbital debris and servicing the ISS.

Solar Sinter – 3D printer uses the sun to create glass objects out of sand

3d printer

Sun-powered, sand-fed 3D printer.

Design student Markus Kayser wanted to test his sun-powered, sand-fed 3-D printer, but he knew the gray skies in London wouldn’t do. He decided to ship the 200-plus-pound contraption to Cairo, Egypt, flew there himself, and haggled with officials for two days to get it out of customs. A few small “tips” and 11 hours of driving later, he finally made it to the Sahara. But soon the mercury hit 104 degrees, his components nearly overheated, and he was forced to improvise.

“Noah” capsule

When the tsunami alarm sounds and water quickly begins to rise you can escape in the “Noah” spherical earthquake and tsunami shelter. The 1.2 meter (4 feet) diameter tsunami survival capsules were designed by Japan’s Cosmo Power as floating emergency shelters capable of holding up to four adults.

Medi-Ring – customizable ring to identify prescription medication bottles

openingletter 005

Featured invention at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase 2011

MEDI-RING® was developed by a pharmacist to help eliminate errors when taking prescription medications at home. In 2008, nearly 1.9 million people were treated or hospitalized in the U.S. for illness and injuries related to taking medicines, a 54% increase in incidents over previous years. The growing number of such errors can be attributed to an increase in the number of medications being prescribed, and the fact that many pharmacy labels indicate dosages, but fail to identify specifically what the medication treats. Also, according to the National Community of Pharmacists Association, “as many as 75% of Americans admit they don’t take medications as directed.” MEDI-RING® is a user-friendly device that snaps onto prescription bottles presenting a space on which the patient may write what the medication controls, and any other information they feel is necessary to take the drug correctly.

Washing machine and arcade combo

laundryfighter

Looks like a winner!

UK’s Kingston University design student Lee Wei Chen realized that the skills he developed playing a lot of video games are practically useless in real life, so he set out to do something about it.

Behold, the washing machine/arcade combo, where the likelihood of getting your clothes cleaned depends on your ability to play the game…

How else will 3D printing change the world?

This 3D printed bicycle, exhibited at this week’s London Design Festival, is claimed to be as strong as steel. It was printed from layers of fused nylon, using a technique more commonly deployed in satellite manufacture…

Scientists design a novel magnetic cloaking device

magnets 5859976

Scientists have just created the antimagnet.

Scientists from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona designed a magnetic cloak that’ll both shield an object from an outside magnetic field and prevent an internal one from leaking out. It’s an antimagnet and it’ll have various military and medical applications.

The antimagnet uses a superconducting material that blocks the internal magnetic field of an object and several dampening layers to block the effect of the superconductor on the external magnetic field. Sounds complicated, and it is, but it could save your life some day…
