Revolutionizing Snow Mobility: The MoonBike – A Sustainable Alternative to Snowmobiles

In 2015, French aeronautical engineer Nicolas Muron found inspiration during a visit to his grandparents in the French Alps, where snowmobiles dominated winter transportation. Disturbed by the noise and pollution caused by these conventional snow vehicles, Muron envisioned a better solution – an e-bike designed for snow. Thus, the MoonBike was born.

Weighing only 163 lbs, the MoonBike is a lightweight alternative to traditional snowmobiles, clocking in at less than one-third of their weight. With dimensions of 88 inches in length, 28 inches in width, and a ten-inch track, the electric snow bike boasts a 3 kW (4 hp) motor generating 170 Nm (125 ft-lbs) of torque. This power allows the MoonBike to effortlessly navigate steep mountain slopes, providing a sustainable and quieter experience in contrast to traditional snowmobiles.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ana Paula Assis, IBM’s General Manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, posed the question, “Is quantum going to really create a cybersecurity Armageddon?” and asserted, “It’s going to.”

Quantum computers, leveraging parallel processing to drastically enhance computing power, are expected to render existing encryption systems obsolete. Assis, who anticipates the quantum era arriving by 2030, highlighted IBM’s role in developing foundational technologies for this paradigm shift.

A groundbreaking solution may be on the horizon in the form of a wearable patch designed to painlessly administer various drugs through the skin, activated by a smartphone. Developed at the University of North Carolina by a team led by professors Wubin Bai and Juan Song, this experimental device, named the Spatiotemporal On-Demand Patch (SOP), presents a novel take on microneedle patches.

Microneedle patches typically consist of small polymer sheets embedded with tiny, sharp, medication-loaded studs that dissolve harmlessly into the skin upon contact. In contrast, the SOP boasts a unique design. Its top surface features an electrical circuit, and each needle can be individually loaded with different medications. Moreover, all the needles are coated with a thin layer of gold. Initially, this gold coating prevents the needles from dissolving upon application to the skin.
