The grim conclusions of the largest-ever study of fake news

IMG_5851

Falsehoods almost always beat out the truth on Twitter, penetrating further, faster, and deeper into the social network than accurate information.

A large megaphone projects lies, fake news, falsehoods, and images of Donald Trump, Mark Zuckerberg, and Hillary Clinton. A smaller megaphone projects truth.

Hybrid solar cell captures energy from the sun and raindrops

IMG_5837
A new hybrid solar cell device can capture energy from the sun and from the movement of raindrops. As useful and ubiquitous as solar energy is becoming, it still has one major Kryptonite: gloomy weather. Now, a team of Chinese engineers has developed a hybrid solar cell that can produce electricity come rain or shine, using the triboelectric effect to harvest energy from the movement of raindrops on its surface.

Baidu’s new A.I. can mimic your voice after listening to it for just one minute

IMG_5832

We’re not in the business of writing regularly about “fake” news, but it’s hard not to be concerned about the kind of mimicry technology is making possible. First, researchers developed deep learning-based artificial intelligence (A.I.) that can superimpose one person’s face onto another person’s body. Now, researchers at Chinese search giant Baidu have created an A.I. they claim can learn to accurately mimic your voice — based on less than a minute’s worth of listening to it.

These cheap paper water filters remove lead, arsenic, and bacteria

IMG_5824

Just pour water through the Mesopaper and it does the rest.

On a visit to Bangladesh in 2011–where an estimated 20 million people are exposed to arsenic in local drinking water–scientist Liangjie Dong worked with a team to teach residents how to use a filtration system he designed that could make the water safe. The technology worked, but it wasn’t self-explanatory: it required training in how to use a special cartridge, and special instructions for how to dispose of it after use.

The best place to retire depends on what you value.

When deciding the best place to retire, it’s important to consider affordability, quality of life, and health care.

Minnesota is the best for quality of life and healthcare, but has low affordability for retirees.

Florida is the best state for retirees, not surprising considering it has the most senior citizens.

Stanford researchers develop stretchable, touch-sensitive electronics

IMG_5810

Stanford researchers have set the stage for an evolution in electronics by taking the concept of ‘artificial skin’ to the next level, demonstrating not only a stretchable circuitry that can feel the touch of a ladybug, but a manufacturing process to mass produce this circuitry.

New CRISPR method takes on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

IMG_5808

The advance of CRISPR gene editing technology, which uses an RNA strand to guide an enzyme called Cas9 to cut a specific portion of DNA, has raised concerns and sparked debate as people envision a not-so-distant future populated by bioengineered super-crops, genetically flawless pets, and customized babies. While the method could be used for these purposes, it’s also showing potential as a valuable medical tool, with a seemingly new condition added each week to the list of what CRISPR may one day cure.
