Sometimes the items we use everyday seem dull and ordinary.  We never think that one day they might serve as material for an inspiring piece of art. Toasters, buttons and even eggshells have become quite impressive art pieces in the past, and predicting the materials that we’ll see used in the future is almost impossible. When it comes to pure creativity, artists who venture into the unknown have to be the most inspiring for aspiring artists today. Overlooking the obvious is nothing an artist should ever do it seems, and that becomes apparent when you find art pieces that border on the brink of madness. (Pics)

Circular stairs were commonplace in castle towers during medieval times. Staircases were designed to go the same direction all the way around, ascending clockwise, to suit right-handed swordsmen for ease in hindering the attacker. Fast forward to the late 1800s and stair design changes dramatically when steel and reinforced concrete are introduced, and the use of dramatic curves and fantastic sweeps become important elements in staircase workmanship. Even today, stair-crafting ingenuity continues, with many staircases doubling for incredible feats of gravity and eye-popping works of art. (Pics)

Amazing 3D landscapes carved out of books

“So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes”, says interdisciplinary artist Guy Laramee who, in the course of his 30 years of practice, found his way through such varied and numerous disciplines as : stage writing, stage directing, contemporary music writing, musical instrument design and building, singing, video, scenography, sculpture, installation, painting and literature. Laramee uses books that are slowly falling apart, such as old encyclopedias and dictionaries to create dramatic landscapes… (more pics after jump)

‘Reading Between the Lines’ – Belgian architects build see-through church

Reading Between the Lines

Belgian architect duo Pieterjan Gijs and Arnuot Van Vaerenbergh have designed and constructed a see-through steel framed church.  In cooperation with Z33, the art museum of Hasselt, they are working on a five-year long installation project, where they will construct transparent churches throughout the country. (Pics)
