Mcor Iris 3D Printer

Most people think 3D printing involves a machine that either extrudes molten plastic, in a way similar to how a hot glue gun works, or think of one of the larger industrial level 3D printers manufactured by 3D systems or Stratasys. These huge machines print objects in a variety of materials, but come with price tags that are only affordable for a select few.

Full color printing is generally a privilege limited to professional and high-end consumer 3D printers, so the more casual user is likely stuck printing in one or two colors. But Cédric Kovacs-Johnson and Charles Haider, both chemical engineering undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, say they have come up with a solution: a sub-$100 device that upgrades desktop 3D printers to print in a full rainbow of colors. They call it Spectrom.

pantone color of 2012 c600cda81f5ebcaIt’s official. It’s in.

The above hue is Tangerine Tango (also referred to as “red”), which, as The Color of 2012, must grace one object in your possession, lest you feel like a peasant. It’s… kind of boring? Maybe it’s seeing it on a piece of fabric instead of a shiny computer or vibrant iPhone case, but it’s not really doing much for me here. But Pantone disagrees, duh…

Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color Takes on Amazon’s Kindle

nook-vs-kindle

Which e-reader will come out on top?

In December 2009, brick-and-mortar book-selling powerhouse Barnes & Noble got into the e-reader game, two years after Amazon.com’s Kindle jump-started the category. Its Nook had some distinguishing characteristics: you navigated the interface using a tiny color touchscreen that sat under its black-and-white E Ink display, for instance, and could loan out e-books to Nook-owning pals. Mostly, though, the gizmo felt like a twist on the Kindle formula, not a departure from it — and while it may have been fancier, it was also pokier and glitchier.

Color of the Ocean Could Have a Drastic Effect on Hurricanes

A change in the color of ocean waters could have a drastic effect on the prevalence of hurricanes, new research indicates. In a simulation of such a change in one region of the North Pacific, the study finds that hurricane formation decreases by 70 percent. That would be a big drop for a region that accounts for more than half the world’s reported hurricane-force winds.
