Researchers develop new process that raises prospects of 3D printed bone grafts

Broken bone

3D printing could help mend broken bones.

One of the 3D printing health applications of 3D printing discussed the most is the manufacturing of bespoke scaffolds that could be used to mend broken bones. It’s promising, but it  has been held back by the difficulties in printing materials that are strong, flexible and can encourage the regrowth of healthy bone in the same way as current methods, such as bone grafts.

Spider silk could be an ideal answer for helping heal wounds.

Researchers may have found a better alternative for providing skin grafts to wounds.  It turns out that spider silk is legendary for its strength, as well as its possible healing properties. Tissue engineer Hanna Wendt at Medical School Hannover in Germany honed in on this and found that by creating an artificial skin spun from spider silk, we could have an ideal answer for helping heal wounds.

Skin From A Factory

Skin From A Factory

Skin from a factory — this has long been the dream of pharmacologists, chemists and doctors.

Skin from a factory – this has long been the dream of pharmacologists, chemists and doctors. Research has an urgent need for large quantities of ‘skin models’, which can be used to determine if products such as creams and soaps, cleaning agents, medicines and adhesive bandages are compatible with skin, or if they instead will lead to irritation or allergic reactions for the consumer. Such test results are seen as more meaningful than those from animal experiments, and can even make such experiments largely superfluous.
