The Cloud might be the most disruptive innovation ever

What makes the cloud so disruptive is that it compels legacy players to change their business models.

In Harvard professor Clayton Christensen’s 1997 management classic The Innovator’s Dilemma, he coined the term disruptive innovation.  The central premise was that a change in technology can completely transform the basic economics of an business.

South Korea’s internet speeds blow away the rest of the world

Here’s a speed test conducted at a coffee shop in Seoul using its free WiFi.

South Korea is a connected country. There’s free WiFi just about anywhere you go, even at the airport. And if you travel a lot, you know free WiFi at an airport is nearly impossible to come by. Not only is there free WiFi everywhere, but that Internet is much, much faster than what you typically get in the U.S.

Online and mobile advertising hits $43 billion

Digital revenue surpassed broadcast TV this year.

Digital advertising online and via mobile crossed the $40 billion mark for the first time ever this past year, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau. Since 2004, the average growth rate has been 18 percent. And this year, digital ad revenues surpassed broadcast television for the first time.

Europe to abolish roaming charges by December 2015

The EU is one step from ending roaming charges and delivering net neutrality for all Europeans.

The first move was to slash pricing of mobile phone roaming costs across Europe. Then calls were made to abolish mobile roaming costs completely, with a view towards “safeguarding citizens’ right to access an open Internet.” Today that vision has become a reality.

Zuckerberg explains why drones are better than balloons to deliver internet access

Facebook wants to place internet drones over specific population centers.

Facebook and Internet.org revealed their intentions last week to connect the developing world through aerial drones and satellites. Their plans drew the inevitable comparisons to Google’s Project Loon, which would field fleets of balloons in the Earth’s stratosphere. The similarities weren’t lost on Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
